Overview
More
A centrepiece on Plymouth's Hoe, Smeaton's Tower is one of the city's most recognisable and well-loved landmarks. The lighthouse was originally built out on the notorious Eddystone Reef in 1759. It was taken down in the early 1880s and approximately two thirds of its structure moved stone by stone to its current resting place. Now standing at 72 feet high, it offers brilliant views of Plymouth Sound and beyond. Visitors can climb to the top courtesy of a series of stairs and some of the original 18th century ladders.

Took our grandson who will be 5 in September. He climbed to the top easily and was free. He really enjoyed the climb and the view.

Did not have the opportunity to go up the tower but it did not seem especially impressive. Makes the area look a little nicer but it is not a standout feature. We just wanted to focus on the water views at the time.

If so, then climbing Smeaton's Tower is well worth the view from the top. Each level in the tower has some interesting information about how it was used. Educational. If you have young children, watch out for them as the steps and ladders are VERY...More

A great visit, really interesting. The climb is worth it. Reasonably priced. You do need to be fit enough as there are a lot of steps, but the lovely view is a great reward. Children aged 3 & 5 loved it.
