The main city library at the other end of North Hill has closed to create a History Centre and a new style and type of library has opened on a small scale in Mayflower St , making the old fashioned but well stocked subscription library up by the barristers chambers a much more interesting a useful facility despite its idiosyncrasies.

Closed Wednesday and Sunday. Open 10.30 till 7pm on Monday but other days 10 till 12.30 I have reservations about this place but it is making increasing efforts to be welcoming and inclusive. With the dwindling enthusiasm of the public libraries, PPL is becoming a bit more interesting and useful.

Spend a few minutes exploring the PPL website not least the home page and the catalogue search mechanism and you will begin to discern the struggle going on at all levels between the perceived history and stature of this local institution and the reality of the modern world. That said if you can adjust and see through the fog, you... More

Let's hope the people of Plymouth galvanise themselves behind this rare library and help it remain independent. For years dark forces have tried to nudge it into amalgamation with Plymouth Athenaeum. That would be detrimental as the Athenaeum will only asset strip it to fund their own precarious financial problems. The collection of books is a tribute to pre and... More

Perhaps a little too private or exclusive for it's own good. I noticed it again this week as I walked up over the brow of North Hill and it is now much more prominent on it's corner site. I came here twice while on my PG course at the uni. It is a very old fashioned and unexpected institution not... More

I live with a member of the Proprietory Library and have visited occasionally with him. It has more life to it than its name and the photos suggest. It struggles a bit in the modern world with so much material available on the internet and fiction so widely available in cheap paperbacks or on eBooks. The paint job on the... More

This place looks austere from the outside. Not very inviting despite occasional notices of open days and invitations to new users. Most Plymothians if they have noticed it all, have possibly only done so from the top deck of a red bus caught up in North Hill traffic. Potential visitors and users need to know more about what it does.... More

My neighbour is a 'subscriber' and pays about £1 a week to use the private/independent library. She goes to some of their events. I have been taken along to an open day and once after that when she thought I was showing some interest. It's difficult. It is quite a closed inclusive set up. The book stock, maybe 20k or... More

Nice idea. A subscription library with a wide selection of general interest books. But the world has moved on. Kindles, Amazon cheap hard copies generally delivered next day, Internet resources for anything arty or reference. A well intentioned friend took me on a visit a few weeks ago but I am afraid that the visit put me off rather than... More

This library is a place of great potential; having lost the core of its stock during the war. It has been a very self-effacing club but I understand there is a younger, educated and more dynamic President in the place now who has some progressive ideas and is making things happen. Whether they should stay in the current building remains... More
