Stop awhile, because of the crowd, take a photograph or two, because you must, and listen to the buskers below, who appear to favour this wall trekking bottle neck.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 6 May 2024
- Heather MCarlisle, United Kingdom157 contributionsLots to offer in this historic cityWe had a brilliant day in Chester. We enjoyed walking the walls and had a good view of the race course. The added bonus was that it was race day! We found a lovely place to eat called The Pink Lettuce, which is in the upper part of the Rows , so we got a view of all that was happening in the centre. It is a compact historic city centre and well signposted if you want to find particular attractions. The Cathedral cafe is a very atmospheric place with stunning modern stained glass windows and good food and coffee.Visited May 2024Travelled with familyWritten 5 June 2024
- OldBearWigan, United Kingdom11,402 contributionsA Grade 1 Listed BuildingBelieved to be the second most photographed clock in the UK, second to Big Ben. Whether walking along Eastgate Street or along the City Walls the clock significantly stands out in the foreground, once you reach it you’ll be amazed at its splendor. It is a Grade 1 Listed building and though its only 125 years old, it compliments the city wall and the buildings along Eastgate Street very nicely.Visited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 26 July 2024
- NoraatcSudbury, Massachusetts40,002 contributionsOne of the most famous timepieces in the worldThe clock is one of the most famous timepieces in the world and it deservingly attracts a lot of tourists. The close look could be taken from Eastgate you pass on the Walls Walk. The buildings closer to the clock are those lovely timber black and white houses which make Chester so attractive.Visited August 2024Travelled soloWritten 9 September 2024

Beautiful place and great shopping area. There is a walking path on the old city wall which allows you to stroll around the city center. I loved Chester, specially in winter, it is like being in a fairy tell!! We lived there for six months in 2017. Will definitely go back!

How could i visit Chester and not see the second most photographed clock in the country (after BIG Ben).
Perfect way to end my trip to Chester, visiting Eastgate Clock, located on a bridge on Eastgate itself. You can climb up on the city walls and walk directly through the legs of the clock itself.
A truly stunning clock and piece of engineering.

This beautiful gate with its ornamental clock had been a feature of every one of our visits to Chester. As you walk along the main shopping street you go through the arch and it is extremely iconic.
For the first time though on this latest visit we did the city wall walk which is highly recommended. If you do this in its entirety you will end up at Eastgate looking down on the shopping street and enjoying a different perspective on things.
It is very easy walking and the walls are well kept. A must do on every visit from now on for us.

Gorgeous clock to be found in the middle of the main shopping area. Some stunning black and white tradional buildings can be found in the same area. Good to see a nice clock and in working order and well cared for.

This clock is a focal point and makes a great meeting place for the city of Chester.
Chester makes a great day out from Liverpool and nearby North Wales.
I did a solo walking tour of Chester starting with The Rows. East Gate Clock. The Cathedral and then on to the Riverside.
There is lots of nice bars and eateries around the clock to the cathedral..

The clock structure is one of the city's main icons, erected to celebrate Queen Victoria's diamond jubilee in 1897. It stands at Eastgate, the historic main entrance to the city and also to the principal Roman fort. It is much photographed from the street in Eastgate or from the city walls which cross Eastgate. One of those places you have to visit when in Chester.

The Eastgate was established in the Roman occupation of the city. The current gate was built in 1768. It is made even more interesting by the Eastgate clock which was built for Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee in 1897. The clock wasn't finished by John Douglas until 1899. It is a remarkable clock and by walking on the Eastgate you can see under the clock as to its workings as well. A must see in Chester.

Fantastic ornamental clock that sits above the old city walls and overlooks the highstreet of shops below. Easily accessible from street level with an old uneven stone stairway up to the clock and old city walkways. Can get busy as everyone queues for photo opportunity.

I walk under the Eastgate Clock almost daily. Situated across the main shopping parade and can be walked under and admired, or crossed on a stroll along the city walls. Chester is a stunning place and the clock one of its jewels. Well worth a visit

I am curious to know whether the Mechanism of this East Gate Chester Clock is the original one installed in 1897 or has the mechanism has been modernised and made electronic etc; keeping the outer Face as it is.
Written 14 September 2016
The clock mechanism was replaced after a full upgrading of the clock was completed in October 2015. It is beautiful and admired by many thousands of tourists and of course we who live in Chester!
