I visited the Arnos Vale Cemetery with my dad and his friends from Kolkata. It was a very peaceful place. We visited the tomb of respected Raja Rammohon Roy, often called the "Father of Modern India". He was instrumental in abolishing the Sati daha pratha in Bengal. The magnificent tomb was erected by Prince Dwarkanath Tagore and is worth seeing.

You cannot miss this memorial which was restored a few years ago. It is about fifty metres inside the entrance of Arnos Vale Cemetery on the right hand side. Ram Mohan Roy died in Bristol in 1833 whilst on a visit to England. It is worth spending longer to explore the rest of the cemetery. There are a cafe and toilets about fifty metres beyond Ram Mohan Roy's memorial.

Raja Ram Mohan Roy was a legendary figure in India, who ended the Sati system(Recently widowed Hindu woman commits suicide by fire, typically on the husband's funeral pyre, to save herself from Mughal attack). Unfortunately this system continued even after the Mughal era was over. Raja Ram Mohan played a major role along with the British Administrators to stop this system. Raja died in 1833 while he was in Bristol. The local volunteer whom we met, informed us that there are around 55000 graves in the Armos Vale Cemetery and Raja Ram Mohan's grave is the most visited. It is a beautiful tomb, built in a typical Indian architecture(which makes it more attractive than others). I have attached couple of pictures of the tomb.

Amazing .... One would want to bow down in respect. An ideal place of rest for a person of such great stature. India owes a lot to his works in social reforms for women. We celebrate international women's day... but for Indians the day is meaning less without paying respect in the beautiful resting place of the Raja.
People should go with their family and children so that they also get to know of this great man. Respect .

A brilliant memorial for the great 19th century social reformer and founder of modern India. The Arnos Vale cemetery as a whole is a great place for spending half a day with woodland walks, serene greenery and a beautiful café staffed by friendly people.

Alan was an extremely knowledgeable and darkly humorous tour guide who took us round the cemetery which is a beautiful and fascinating place. The local history is very interesting and there are a number of military graves as well. Well worth a trip.

A remarkable place to visit. Amor Vale cemetery is on the Bath Road and a walk around the place leads to the tomb of Raja Rammohan Roy,founder of Brahma Samaj and the great social reformer. His tomb stands high amid the cemetery. The cemetery is a good place to have a peaceful walk. The staff is helpful and it has ample visitors parking space

Well worth seeing and the whole Arnos Vale cemetery too. It's lovely walking around the cemetery and up in the hills. Finish it off with a coffee and cake at the cafe.
