Gorgeous place. The wildflowers were a riot! And the visit to Zeus' cave, despite the arduous uphill trek, was worth it!

If you are staying along the coast in Crete like we were then this would be worth a trip if you have a car. Just do not follow the Plateau Lassithi on google maps unless you are going on a 4WD, or go as far as the car allows you, was a nice journey.
We stopped enroute at a busy Greek tavern. This area is where we saw some local houses, lots of plantations and views.
We did not go to the cave of Zeus but saw also goats and sheep and even an eagle (or vulture, a big one it was).

It is a wonderful experience this diffused hotel: restaured stone houses, immersed in the nature and under the lovely care of the owners, Alicia and her sister. Congratulations to their entrepreneurial spirit for restructuring these old houses and give new life to the place!

Very large plateau a few kilometres from the tourist beaches of Malia and Cherssonissos. There are many mills and fields. Several small villages with many small restaurants. You need a car to go around the plateau.

Amazing visit to this area! We had a hire car, so drove here to go visit the sites and Zeus' cave - which is also a must see, but will review that separately.
Definitely worth a visit if you are anywhere in East Crete, the drive is stunning through the mountains which suddenly bring you to this massive plateau which they use for farming etc., very easy to park too wherever you choose to stop - lots of places to pull over and take photos!
We also found an olive pressing museum on the way.
Beautiful windmills and after visiting the cave, we stopped a beautiful Taverna which had an amazing view of the Plateau called 'Good Morning Lassithi', which I would highly recommend.
Try the fruit whilst in the area - it is mainly grown on the plateau so super fresh!

Absolutely beautiful place to visit. Try and see it when its not cloudy or raining. Try and visit the Caves of Zeus. It is a 15 to 20 minute climb from the carpark. It is patched except for the last 5 minutes. Wear gripped shoes as I saw many people wearing flipflops. You can take a donkey instead if you want. There are toilets at the top as well.

Well worth the effort, and to discover the real agriculture of Crete. Geoff our driver was so knowledgeable, and made some great stops on the tour. The vultures were very impressive.
