After a few mixed reviews I was unsure about the museum but it turned out to be a really well presented, very comprehensive museum mainly about Tautavel man who predates Homo-erectus. You could criticise it for maybe a few too many displays of bones, tools etc but these are balanced with some excellent dioramas and video presentations, albeit only in... More

Is is where the remains of a human 45000 years old, were found. We very well received by the archeologist who runs the museum. Well worth a visit.

A lot of work has been put into this museum which is in a small French village. It's all based on the find of bones in a local cave. The find has been dated as 450,000+ years old.

We went on late afternoon on the first week of July around 17h15 after a long road from Fort de Salses where we have received a nice booklets explaining all the things to do in the region and been told to show this book to get automatically discounts. Since Tautavel was a bit on my way north to Narbonne we... More

Travelling with two secondary school-aged young people, the displays were tired and unengaging and the audio guide very difficult to follow (strong accent, wrongly-pitched explanations). Furthermore, there was little that was joyous or celebratory about what has been a startlingly wonderful archeological find. Some more animated explanation (visual as well as auditory) using some of the wonders of modern technology... More

We found the visit to this museum very interesting. They give you a device which means that you can listen to the information in your own language which was very helpful.

This is a very interesting and important museum marred by the fact that having arrived at ten o'clock in the morning our visit was cut short and the translation equipment taken from us by the staff as they could not wait to close at midday for their dinner. Very poor I thought as all museums in France are not free.

We visited the Musee du Prehistoire in Tautavel. It has a great collection of stone tools and artifacts from early man discovered in the area. There are some dioramas and the overall feel of the museum is quaint, almost a 70's feel to the museum even though it was founded in 1992.

Parking is not satisfactory here, you have to park about 500 mtrs away and then walk along a pavementless and very busy road, there follows a vertical stiff climb to the museum. On the whole the museum was badly lit, overcrowded with artifacts which were mostly the same- to see one knapped flint is enough- with a very dim film... More
