Panoramic tower in the middle of the Slovenian Collio from which you can admire a breathtaking landscape that extends through the vineyards up to Gorizia
Made of concrete with a spiral staircase of 144 steps for a height of 23 metres, very suggestive and interesting
At its feet there is a monument in memory of those fallen in war just over a km from the beautiful village of Smartno (S. Martino) and a few km from Italy in Vicolo di Vencó
Worth a visit

The climb is not hard - but rewarded with some of the best views in the region. Worth a stop if you are around, but not making a special trip just for the tower. There are not many tourists around so it is easy to park the car, Public transportation is not very convenient.

On the highest hill in the Goriska Brda, part of Slovenia is a viewing tower. After 144 stairs from the ground to the top there is a beautiful panorama view of the hills cultivated in vineyards. In the distance, one could see the Adriatic Sea. Photographers: wait for sunset.

The tower looks out over the valley and mountains. Excellent views from all sides. Photographers should go there for sunset.

Erected in 1961 and is dedicated to the 315 citizens of Brda who gave their lives in WW11. It is 23 metres high and affords great views of Brda, the Julian Alps, the Dolomites in Italy and the Gulf of Trieste.
While visiting the tower we dropped into a very nice Slovenian restaurant called Pri Marjotu. It is only 100 metres from the tower. We were treated to a plate of four different types of pasta and very nice local wines.

The Gonjace lookout tower is hard to miss. You won't have trouble finding it, since it's located just off the main road. There's no entry fee, so everyone can enjoy the picturesque view from the top. The bird's eye view of Smartno village is esspecially impressive. Not for people scared of heights!

Tower is nice architecture and is work of Marko Šlajmer. Younger people can run to the top in less than a minute; older people need some more time. There is no lift. It is always open and you have nice view to the Alps and to Dolomiti in Italy. When it is really clear, you can see even Adriatic see. Villages in Brda are all around. You have interesting monument near the tower (it is a part of a monument). Bronze relief is work of Janez Boljka. It is just a short walk or drive to village Šmartno. You have a parking for one bus or several cars 20 m from the tower.

The circular hike up the tower was a great and safe exercise
as the steps and siderails were sturdy and well placed.
Lovely 360 view.

We biked up here to climb this 144-stair, 23-meter tower to look over Šmartno where we will have dinner and stay the night. It was a very nice introduction to both this Medieval fortified village and its surrounding landscape. Giving us a well-rounded perspective.

It is said that, in nice weather, it offers wonderful views of Goriska brda, Furlanija, Carnian and Julian Alps, Trnovo forest, Dolomite, Karst, Trieste bay and Vipava Valley. The view didn’t extend quite that far the day we were there but it was still awe-inspiring.

Built in 1961, the Gonjace lookout tower is also a memorial dedicated to the victims of World War II. Below the tower is a bronze sculpture devoted to the 315 citizens of Brda who gave their lives in WWII. The lines engraved on the bronze plaque ‘To the sons of Brda and Benečija, the faithful guardians of our language’ were written by the writer France Bevk.

The steps are fairly wide, so it is quite easy to climb, but can be a little intimidating if suffering from vertigo or if very windy. I personally hugged the center of the circular stairway (it was windy) in order to make it to the top where there is a 360 degree view and an orientation table listing the towns and mountain peaks you see all around.

Worth a stop but not a long detour to get here.
