About
Those expecting to merely see old houses in the Open Air Museum Vogtsbauernhof are in for a surprise: you will find domestic animals of old breeds in the stalls, goats and sheep grazing in the meadows, and the black kitchens still smell of the last fire’s smoke. A comprehensive and carefully planned programme with daily activities provides for an eventful visit to the museum throughout the entire season. During the season, numerous craftsmen and –women present their traditional crafts on the grounds of the museum. The programme alternates daily so you will get to see at least one of following: the brush-maker, the spinner, the weaver, the wood-carver, the straw-shoemaker and many more.

Our host recommended the open air museum to us and we were so glad she did.

We decided to drive from Gengenbach which took around 45 minutes. There was plenty of parking and you just follow the signs and foot steps over the bridge then under a tunnel to find the entrance.

There are around 16 buildings around the museum all set up to demonstrate how people lived in the past. We appreciated that the information boards also included English so we could read about the houses. There were also people doing demonstrations around the park and farm animals.

There is a restaurant on sight and 2 smaller cafes. We sat at the one by the playground so our daughter could have a play and had sausages & a cream based pizza - all delicious.

Highly recommend the museum for families with kids or adults without. There is something for everyone.

A parc in the countryside filled with authentic farms and houses from different decades and areas of the Schwarzwald. It gives you a realistic impression how life was several ages ago. A well maintained parc including animimals, fruit trees and flowers to complete the "Erlebnis". Astonishing to see how dark these old houses are inside...

Must visit if you spend some time in the black forest with your family. I was disappointed first as saw no English translation, but it is available on every description board as all of them is foldable! Haha, my bad! We really enjoyed to go back time and visit these amazing houses. We spent 4 hours there. Parking is 4EUR for all day which is great!

This hands-on collection of real houses, lived in and worked in, shows how people lived, what skills they practiced, how the land and weather shaped their lives, how they made their farmhauses both practical and attractive. I have been many times, with visitors from the US while we lived in Germany, and they never failed to be fascinated, from 5 year olds to 85 years old. The single most informative item in the Black Forest.

I'm sorry, but going from one house to another was very boring for our kids and even for us. Take for example the open air museum in the Netherlands, there are plenty of things for the kids to do there. In the black forest version, there are two or three small workshops coasting extra money and even them are not so attractive. You can easily pass this attraction, save you time and money for the other stuff.

We started from Hausach by train and reached Gutach by 10 am. The museum is located just outside the train station, and there is an entry fee, an audio guide along with the map are provided too. The whole area is very well planned and laid out, not to mention, magnificently preserved too.. One of the most interesting facts is that, some of the houses seen are actually from else where, (of black forest region) bought by the authorities and recreated here to perfection. This only shows how interested and committed they are in preserving their history and culture. Hats off!! As intended, this place gives a detailed info. about the life and culture of the black forest people in the olden days. There are a lot of activities taking place in the museum like cooking, mill and craftsmen demonstrations and family workshops. Plenty of outdoor play activities for kids too.. This place is accessible by wheel chair/stroller and has souvenir shops, restaurant, wc etc. For further info one could visit www.vogtsbauernhof.de

My husband and I visited in early May and we both really enjoyed it. The museum is very well done - not cheesy at all. There are several big houses that have been moved here from their original locations throughout the Black Forest and completely restored. It really does show you what it was like to live in those times. They had original furnishings, tools, clothing etc... also displayed throughout the houses. There are also several places to eat right there so we enjoyed lunch there too. We went to Triberg Falls in the morning and spent the afternoon here. It was a fun day in the Black Forest!

This is excellent.

Vogtsbauernhof has a large collection of different farm buildings from the surrounding areas, complete with manor houses, baking houses, mills, store houses and you name it, to form complete farm steads. Complete with some live stock, gardens etc, and a very few people in local costumes.

Excellent information on signposts, most of then in English and French as well as German, telling evertything from how the buildings were used and how people lived there and where the buildings were moved from.
And, unusually, architectural drawings explaining the construction of the buildings.

In some of the buildings are exhibitions of various topics on Schwarzwald and typical traits of
local economy, like Clock making and straw weaving home industry, and forestry.

I spent most of the day there.
And I came away understanding something about why Schwarzwald farm houses look the way they do,
and many other things about this area and its local economy in older times

What I missed a little was that the museum sort of stopped history at say 1900, except for one exception.
You don't see how these farmhouses developed and were used after that into modern time.

Also, with one exception, you get the impression that these complete, self sufficient farms, were the only human dwellings that existed in the area.

I think people not that much into open air museums, might find still find Vogtsbauernhof worth a visit,
but become bored after a short while, or not spend the whole day.
Also, it's not an activity park for kids, although there are some actitivies more for kids, like live stock,
some baking and cooking, and some work ongoing in some of the houses.

I was there in late June, which seems to be sort of mid or low season in Schwarzwald. And, it was rather foul weather. And yet, the place was, although not crowded, at least rather busy.
It was quite OK. But if this was a not so busy day, then it must be veeery crowded on a really busy day.

The restaurant is goood. Not just good for a museum restaurant, but really good, with varied imaginative german food suiting many different purses and gastronomic expectations. The restaurant is huge. Yet, it was rather full, almost crowded when I was there.

I took the bus to the museum, from Hausach. That was rather convenient and there are trains to fit the buses. Walking from Hausach, would have been a bit too far.

One last thing. The museum guide. It is good. If you want something to read about this area then this museum guide is good reading. You might not actually need it in the museum itself, because of all the signposts. But there is lots of background reading, apart from infomation about the buildings. In fact it's the only good background reading I've found about the area, in English.

We traveled by train to Hausach and followed the signs to the public bus #7150 right outside the train station that took us to the Vogtsbauernhof. The bus ride was only 15-20 minutes and stops right at the entrance to the museum. Our Baden-Wurttemberg group train ticket also covered the bus.
Outside the museum proper, there is a restaurant and gift shops where you can also buy snacks and drinks.
The Vogtsbauernhof has a first-class visitors center with very clean restrooms and a large gift shop and a restaurant.
We arrived late on a rainy day and there were few visitors and little activity. The roof on the largest building was in the process of being re-thatched but no one was working because of the rain. In spite of the drizzle, the buildings are interesting and well maintained. The triangular signs also have a panel in English.
Having checked the signs at the bus stop when we got off, we easily caught the bus back to Hausach. It is also possible to take the bus further on to Triberg but one person in our group was ill and wanted to get back to the hotel.
Overall, the Vogtsbauernhof is very interesting and well worth a visit.

We travelled via train from Strasbourg to the Black Forest Museum and it was a very entertaining day. We enjoy train travel as you get to see the local scenery as you move and this day did not disappoint, the view was excellent and the train leaves you at the door to the museum. The museum itsel gives a great rendition into the living conditions through many different parts of the forest and over different times in history. I do not normally give five stars on reviews but this place is great.
