Visited the city hall, very neatly maintained , which is in the heart of the city with a nice frontage.

It’s not a lot to look at from the outside being a rather functional box-shape. However, once inside it’s a different story. On the ground floor one is immediately confronted by a water feature complete with water jets, a bed for plants and an extraordinary metal sculpture of a huge bird of prey as a sort of grim reaper. In a corridor a huge wooden clock and a bright painting of the same figure twice one completed the other in progress. On the first floor one arrives at an impressive glass atrium showcasing a number of pieces none more striking than a huge frieze-like piece by Dallaire of mythical humans and birds. There is also the entrance to the Gallerie Montcalm current showing an exhibition of photographs by Sue Mills of female immigrants to Gatineau from all over the world plus their individual autobiographies. Outside a raucous painting by Huot.

Abutting the City of Ottawa, separated by only a bridge Gatineau is a charming little town located in the province of Quebec. Nice homestays here and all basic facilities, can provide an economical alternative to the expensive hotels of Ottawa if you have a car to commute. We loved it!

The City Hall is connected by walkways to Promenade du Portage and Place du Centre shopping center as well as the passport office. I took a walk along the walkway or passerelles as they are called in French, and ended up in the city hall. There was a wonderful art exhibit and the library is attached. I found it by serendipity but this is probably a place you wouldn't want to make a special trip for.

After all the old history in Ottawa, this city hall is unusually modern. It's a pretty nice hall, fairly standard and a nice piece of architecture.

The city hall of Gatineau is a very nice building with a huge glass roof and multiple plants. It includes an art gallery , a library and a series of artworks offered by various embassies . On the back patio , a place awaits you with a fountain becomes a skating rink in winter. Located next to the Canadian Museum of history. Not too far, there is the place Aubry where it is possible to find good restaurants and a farmer market every Thursday from May to September.
