Description:

Gunby Hall is a country house in Gunby, near Spilsby, in Lincolnshire....

Gunby Hall is a country house in Gunby, near Spilsby, in Lincolnshire. Otherwise known as Tennyson’s ‘Haunt of Ancient Peace’, Gunby Hall is a fine ‘William and Mary’ red brick house, dating from 1700 and extended in the 1870s, located in a quiet corner of Lincolnshire. Many of the rooms are paneled and there is a beautiful oak staircase. The house contains collections of grand family portraits, elegant furniture and exquisite china. The Massingberd family had connections with many influential people of their day; from the Wedgewood family, Tennyson and the composer Ralph Vaughn Williams to Rudyard Kipling and Charles Darwin. Bennett Langton, James Boswell and Dr Johnson were also regular visitors to the house and there is a famous signed copy of Boswell’s ‘The Life of Dr Johnson’ kept in the Library. Joshua Reynolds’ paintings of Bennett Langton and his wife are part of the collection as well a beautiful grand piano that Ralph Vaughn Williams played when visiting the Massingberds. The exquisite garden is planted with traditional English plants, fruit and flowers. It has a dovecot that pre dates the house and a charming loveseat hidden away behind fragrant roses

We stayed in National Trust cottage over Xmas, really great no TV, chill out Xmas. Excellent facilities though would have been nice to see Hall and gardens. Lovely views at sunrise in heavy frost

We have been to Gunby in the summertime, but we thought we have a early Christmas break. What a lovely place to go to feel like Christmas. It was panto themed, I LOVED IT ALL!!!. We went once, but my Mum is disabled, so she sat and sang Christmas carols in the drawing room ,while we went for a walk... More

As national trust properties go this is an excellent example of history and exhibits to provide a great few hours of escapism into history. The house is a fabulous historical example and the gardens are really lovely for a stroll around. The tea shop is small however offers the usual selection of cakes etc and the opportunity to buy the... More

This place has only been open to the public for four years and yes, it has room for further improvement, but we feel a very good start has been made. The National Trust has an excellent group of friendly, enthusiastic volunteers here who are very happy to chat, answer questions etc. We found lots to interest us - the history... More

Whilst only appearing a small house, it contains so much excellent furniture and pictures along with brilliant history and then there are the great gardens as well. Very knowledgeable room guides and ;ots to really enjoy.

What a disappointing trip, parking was very limited -on the roadside approaching the hall .probably difficult when busy times of year. Hall was small and had little to hold interest. We were VERY disappointed with the tea room-if you can call it that!!!.cake was the only option and not very fresh at that!!seating was even worse -smelly damp feeling stable... More

We're so sorry that your recent visit to Gunby did not meet your expectations. Due to the lack of space, electricity and water in the current 'ad hoc' tea-room set up, the offer is indeed limited. There are plans to upgrade our facilities in the coming years (subject to funding) and will then hope to have a wide range of... More

Thanks for your lovely feedback - we've passed your query about the magnets onto the relevant colleague. We should have a 'proper' shop in the not too distant future and hope to sell some Gunby magnets then too. Warmest wishes from the whole Gunby team More
