About
In the heart of Alpilles, the monumental “Carrieres de Lumieres” host extraordinary multimedia shows which are unique in the world. Spectators are totally immersed in the images projected onto all the surfaces of the rock. The ground is completely covered, too, and becomes a vast carpet of images. The site has reopened its doors with the show “Gauguin - Van Gogh, painters of colour,” created by Gianfranco Iannuzzi with Renato Gatto and Massimiliano Siccardi.

- mummyofaandwChelmsford, United Kingdom38 contributionsArtistic and musical treatWe saw the Vermeer to Van Gogh programme and really enjoyed it - the combination of the art and music was wonderful. We didn’t book on line this time as the French school holidays hadn’t started and there was no queue but the carpark was already almost full at 11am. I know from experience that it can get extremely crowded in peak season so my tip would be to get there very early and get tickets in advance. There’s a small café and loos on site and there seemed to be some construction work near both but that had no impact on the programme. All in all another great experience at Carrières des Lumières.Visited April 2023Travelled with familyWritten 7 April 2023
- cr0wefamFullerton, California7 contributionsAmazing experience!the immersive art of the masters inside the caves at Les Baux des Provence was so impressive and beautiful. It was the immensity of the walls and the floors all covered with the beautiful work of art changing with all the colors was just amazing. Definitely a must see.Visited April 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 2 May 2023
- sinza2017Orange, France452 contributionsWorth it!July 2019 This is a wonderful light show in a truly unique setting...Limestone cavern featuring Van Gogh and his work. One can drive through several of Van Gogh’s towns on the way to Les Baux and so one understands why his work is featured here. Worth every penny of the visit. There is free, road side parking... you have to be persistent or stubborn to find it and walk a bit to get back to the light show and town site.Visited July 2022Travelled as a coupleWritten 10 June 2023
- Diana TennisOrlando, Florida32 contributionsA special and fantastic experience that defies description. It is impossible to describe this experience adequately. I almost did not book because it seemed potentially kitschy. The scale of what they have managed, in combination with the location and the production value and the music. It was quite simply amazing. It makes the art museum experience just a touch flat...they should all have this level of full sensory immersion. Go.Visited July 2023Written 15 July 2023
- LaNyonsaiseWest Midlands, United Kingdom890 contributionsTintin.Heading to Marseille airport to take visitors for a late evening flight I had proposed three excursions for the afternoon. They chose this one but then I investigated tickets, only to discover that the Wednesday afternoon was Tintin. By this time they were entirely sold on the unique experience that is Les Carrières. Unfortunately, it’s not the best show for adults. The images move too fast and the music is loud. It’s a bit like watching a cartoon, which is what it is based on, rather than the fine art of other shows. Naturally there were lots of families with children who were running around and would have been just as happy to run around in any large open space. Parking is in roughly excavated quarries with potholes, charges apply and you need to hunt the payment machines. €6.50 will get you 3 hrs and as we didn’t spend as long in the show as last year (Venice) there was enough time to wander into the village before setting off for the airport.Hello, thank you for your comment. We are sorry for your unpleasant experience, the Tintin show is effectively scheduled on Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Regarding car parks, it is managed by the municipality. - LibbyBB39 contributionsFantastic show, parking nightmareVermeer to Van Gogh was stunning, and Mondrian was terrific too. It’s worth visiting for the spectacular quarry location alone. But I wonder how many people give up and go home when faced with the impossible-to-decipher parking machine in the car park opposite the entrance. In bright sunlight, the instructions on the screen are unreadable, even for French people, the reflection is so bad. The people in front of us took 10 minutes to work it out, then were kind enough to return and help us when we could not make sense of it. Without them we may have been forced to give up and would have missed out on a wonderful experience.Hello and thank you for your positive comment on Carrieres des Lumieres. - NatLondres143 contributionsAmazing for adults (scary at times for young toddlers)Phenomenal. It was truly awe inspiring, having been to several other multi sensory shows over the years, none compared. I would love to visit again. One thing to note: it is very dark at times, and the soundtrack includes some quite ‘scary’ music (Romeo and Juliet - Dance of The Knights). Our toddler found the Vermeer section a bit challenging! Loved the Van Gogh part though.Visited September 2023Travelled with familyWritten 30 September 2023
- Ready to travelHouston, Texas44 contributionsA fabulous experience -- highly recommendedCarrieres des Lumieres means "Quarry of Lights." This place was a last minute stop. I did not know what to expect when I was told a light show in an old stone quarry. I have not been to anything like it. It is a show with surround-sound music with different masterpieces (Vermeer to Van Gogh when we were there) projected over the walls at the same time. We walked around to take it in from all angles. It is definitely worth the stop!Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 25 October 2023
- Melinda B19 contributionsUnforgettable eperience!Absolutely incredible experience! I went a few years ago when they were the first venue to show the Van Gogh exhibition on the towering flat walls of the old quarry. It was magical and unforgettable. So beautifully done. Really, the experience of a lifetime - and I was not all that much of a Van Gogh fan before hand. Also, if you can, make a reservation to have lunch at the nearby winery, Chateau d'Estublon. Also unforgettable. Altogether a day I will always remember.Visited November 2022Travelled with friendsWritten 26 October 2023
- Mike K95 contributionsArt Gets CreativeThis was part of an optional tour offered by a river cruise. Ideally, an hour and a half should have been allocated in that it takes ten to fifteen minutes to understand how the show is set-up and to decide if you want to stay in one place or wander around the entire show space. Music and animations/graphics were very good. If you like creativity and art, do not miss.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 30 October 2023

Fantastic light show of Dutch master paintings which are projected onto the very tall flat walls of an enclosed limestone quarry near Les Baux. Visitors walk around the spacious darkened enclosed quarry to see the same art work projected onto many walls. There are several wide aisles and one can just wander around while looking at the art work. Expect to be standing and walking for at least 1 hour; there are just a few stone slabs against the walls to sit. While there are some stairs at the back of the quarry, these can be avoided; also, there is a slight incline to the walkway as one approaches the back of the quarry. Although it is dark in the quarry, there is enough overhead light to see where you are walking; a flashlight would be a distraction. Take a jacket along as it gets cool inside the light show - about 14-16 degrees.
The light show repeats after one hour - there is no break; it runs continously without definite start and end times. The images on the wall change fairly quickly so there is always some new painting to admire. Because the walls are so tall, visitors' heads never get in the way of the scene projected onto the walls. The light show has loud sound effects - classical music is played continously which I enjoyed. Digital effects are used in some of the art projections to make, for example, angels' wings flutter, ships sway in the sea, fire flares as ships crash and burn in battle. My favorite digital effect occurred when multiple flower canvases showing tulips, roses, and peonies by the Dutch masters were merged. I also enjoyed all of Van Gogh's paintings that were projected on to the wall - Starry Night was spectacular. None of the projected images of the Dutch masters provided either the title of the work or the artist's name. I didn't care for the second part of the light show which featured Mondarian's modern art for about 15 minutes.
We visited as a group with Scenic River Cruises who looked after getting our timed tickets and parking arrangements. It was an excursion I thoroughly enjoyed. The light show was about a 20 minute drive east from Arles where the ship was docked. After the show, we had a quick visit to Les Baux which was nearby.

It's in a huge and fascinating place, but rather disappointing. 15 euros to see projections on the wall, that doesn't do justice to the artists they exhibit and it seems more like a place for instagramers.

Beautiful and stunning
Not cheap but absolutely worth it. We combined the castle entry with the ticket to make the day out of it as it’s almost 1.5 hours drive from Aimen Provence if you avoid tolls

These amazing caves have been converted into a theater showing the artists who toiled in the area and their famous works. It is truly an experience not to be found anywhere else.

Is this the same format as the Van Gogh immersive experience which was in New York City? Do you stay in one place and see everything or do you walk from room to room?

Answer from Mark L hits the spot. I think this is the original show and the NYC is a travelling show from this location.
