About
With a view over Provence to the Mediterranean, the Château des Baux is one of the most beautiful sites in France. It is also a unique place marked by a turbulent past of more than ten centuries: from the Counts of Les Baux (who claimed to be descended from King Balthazar) to the Château’s destruction in 1483 by Richelieu after the wars of religion. This medieval stronghold contains both a castle and a village.

- Talant2007Moscow, Russia26,486 contributionsLe Beau CastleThe castle is very ancient - known since 981. But in 1632 it was destroyed by order of Cardinal Richelieu (1585 - 1642). Now we can see, unfortunately, only ruins. However, the zamoy is located on a cliff and offers stunning views. Also on the castle grounds are full-scale replicas of siege weapons. In 1904 it was classified as a historical monument.Visited February 2024Travelled soloWritten 23 February 2024
- Pascal P19 contributionsExcellentMagnificent site, the bottom of the town is very beautiful, the castle is really a ruin, you have to have imagination... Magnificent view Interesting traditional facilities and activities On-site catering without interest or very expensive Plenty of parking spaces, but you have to get there early to avoid walking too muchVisited April 2023Travelled with familyWritten 17 March 2024
- triplover42116 contributionsFantastic ruins, gorgeous views, loved it!We just loved this experience. Gorgeous views, winding staircases and tunnels to explore, charming little hilltop town. Wear your hiking boots or sneakers! Lots of uneven stairs and surfaces. If you have mobility issues, I'm afraid this probably isn't for you. If, like me, you enjoy exploring old ruins, it's very worth the trip. And it is a schlep. We went in late June, before the bus route that serves Baux directly had opened (I believe it runs July-Aug). We took an Uber from Avivnon (45 min, 65 euros, one-way). If you do that, be sure to arrange for them to pick you up afterwards, because it's out in the boonies and it's not like there's a taxi stand or a bunch of Ubers floating around. Probably it'd be better to do as part of an organized tour. There was also a small hotel there with a pool, if you wished to stay on site. From the car park, you stroll up to the ruins via the little village. There are several cute shops and restaurants. There were signs for an audio tour but we didn't see them in time and didn't get one. We just explored on our own. There's not a lot of signage, so if you want to maximize learning the audio tour is probably a good idea. You can climb windy uneven stairs and take in gorgeous views of the surrounding stones and agricultural fields. There are a few medieval weapon replicas and a garden. Don't miss the troglodyte caves to the left of the entrance. We did the chateau and the light show in the stone quarry which is a short walk (but a steep flight of stairs) away. I do think the light show is worth it if you're there anyway. Those two activities together took about 3 1/2 hours. If you intend to do lots of shopping or have a meal in the town, add extra time for that. It was an expensive day trip, but I'm very glad we went!Visited June 2024Travelled with familyWritten 20 June 2024
- seema60Toronto, Canada999 contributionsCharming village on top of the hillWe went to Les Baux de Provence on a visit to Provence villages. There was a lovely walking path up to a plateau where we could see the Mediterranean in the distance. Lots of tourist shops where I bought a bottle of olive oil.Visited July 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 7 July 2024
- HDBGBordeaux, France324 contributionsUnmissable place if you go to ProvenceVery nice visit / walk in the middle of the leases. Place full of history and perfectly maintained / respected. Be careful with children because many rocks/stones/pebbles can slip. Consider taking hat/cap in high heat.Visited August 2024Travelled with familyWritten 10 August 2024
- Krachen86Coulombiers, France84 contributionsBeautiful village!Beautiful views, visit the castle very nice. Provide a good shoe, because some places are slippery. A lot of wind. Many tourists but we could travel easily. Parking not given (5 € the first hour then 0.50 € per extra hour) which are along the road so if you are unlucky you end up at the very bottom of the village.Visited August 2024Travelled with familyWritten 22 August 2024
- Bruno PNimes, France143 contributionsNot to be missedPicturesque village on the heights of Provence. Very pleasant with family for a walk along the narrow stone streets. A succession of craft shops (For some) and restaurants, ice cream parlours.... The views are really great. International tourists come en masse to enjoy this view of the vineyards and olive trees. A small area of Tuscany awaits you. Avoid tourist days when it is almost impossible to enjoy the calm of the place. I recommend the visit because even for those who do not like old villages not to appreciate is still difficult.Visited August 2024Travelled with familyWritten 29 August 2024

To visit the Château des Baux de Provence with our two sons aged 10 and 14, we opted for the escape game "the mystery of Alix, last lady of Les Baux" (5th supplement per person in addition to the entrance ticket). .) The plot is interesting and the puzzles are very cool. Children and adults alike get involved in the game and cooperate. Everyone did their part to open (successfully) the door to the secret room. Beyond the game, it allowed us to wander through the ruins and discover the castle (by reading the comments.) In the summer, the activities offered are exciting and of high quality (discovery of the blacksmith's profession, operation of the trebuchet, shooting with the crossbow...)
Obviously, the village is magnificent and the panoramas are breathtaking! We recommend arriving as early as possible to enjoy the calm and freshness of the morning... It is crowded (the site is a victim of its own success), parking is expensive, you have to climb (with good shoes) the sun is beating down, the wind is blowing but it is an unmissable place of rare beauty that you absolutely must discover!

Very a very pretty place where you can admire a nice landscape once at the top. To get to the top you take narrow streets and stone paths that are not easy with strollers. To admire the castle up close you will have to pay. The price of parking is really steep: €7 for 4 hours (in summer), come early if you want a ready space because otherwise it will be worth walking to get there.

Magnificent ruined estate.
Exceptional view of Provence. Remember to ask for the audio guide at the checkout otherwise they won't give it to you.
Animation on the use of the castle's defense weapons as well as a theatrical visit, with two friendly actors.
Crossbow shooting workshop.
Bring good shoes and water in case of very high heat.
Small downside in the middle of August, no place to park, and in addition all parking lots and sidewalks are chargeable.

City and castle visited when I was a teenager: it had not left me with an unforgettable memory. My opinion has not changed: overpriced parking with not adapted parking system (we put 3 plumbs to get a ticket in winter so I can not imagine in summer the time it must take). Beautiful village but transformed into a tourist catcher. The pompom: the castle excessive price for ruins. In short there are so many other charming medieval villages typical of the south that justifies the deadlock on this one!

Bonjour

I visited with my family on a VERY hot July day. The village was really pretty with lots of nice restaurants and shops to walk round.
We walked up to the Chateau which was HOT but there were great views, a breeze and lots of history to take in. It is worth walking up to each of the high points to get all the different views. It was a clear day and we could see for miles.
We also got the ticket which included the light show, this is back down near where we parked the cars but within the caves and spectacular - it is worth including and on a hot day, the cool caves were lovely!
Overall, a great day out and worthy of a visit.

I have a soft spot for antiquity – the Colosseum & Forum are my favorites but Les Baux’s Castle is right up there. Sure, the ruins are impressive and complete enough to imagine what was once there but maybe it’s the panoramas that make this spot extra special? There is a lot to walk around and they do a good job with signage to give visitors that aren't on a tour or audio tour an indication of what they are seeing.
Obvious I know but I'll mention ... the ground is uneven and the old stone is slippery in places (even when perfectly dry). There are some steep stairs to access some areas but they had what I felt were appropriate railings. I only had flip-flops on and didn't have any trouble but sneakers or good shoes would be the first choice. We didn't use a guide or independent audio tour and I'd say we spent probably 1 to 1 1/2 hours from when we entered the ticket area (keep in mind it was not crowded and we could easily walk up to access areas and read things without waiting).

The Chateau at the top of Les Baux en Provence offers spectacular views of the surrounding area. It was blistering cold from the rain and wind the day we were there however it well worth it. I'm sure it's much more engaging in the summer when everything would be open and bustling. However, we still enjoyed our experience.

This is an amazing place. We arrived before the chateau was open and shopped and walked around. There is plenty of shopping, walking around, views, and plaques with historical information. Park at the bottom. Pay at the machine. It wasn't working the day we were there. Hike up to the shops, which open before the site. We found some candies and chocolates. It helps to have at least a rudimentary understanding of French. Check for discounts at the ticket booth. Once in, there's plenty to see. Those with mobility issues need to consider the terrain if they've made it this far. You will be warned of steps that are extremely worn from thousands of years of wear. There are railings, but you still have to be very careful, especially if it's windy. There are replicas of a catapult, and trebuchets, and explanations of their use. And audio guide is available at the ticket booth. It's fun climbing and scampering around. Save time to shop and browse in the town. We had three hours, and it wasn't enough time. There are men's and women's rooms near the top of the site. Cash or credit.

Having a limited time to visit in this area, I did walk around on the very top platform which is just at the entrance to the Château. A large, mostly flat rock area, hot as an oven on the day of my visit, over 40 Celsius, no shade available, but worth the climb through the village. The view is absolutely beautiful, a must in your Provence itinerary

Les Baux and the Chateau de Baux were among my favorites from our recent trip to Provence, Les Baux is a beautiful village with great shops and restaurants and the chateau is not to be missed. It is a huge ruined chateau and I think that the signs explaining the area in English and French were very helpful. it required quite a bit of walking and stair climbing as it is so big and there were also some areas where you could walk up to the top of the towers for a great view. The signs had quite a bit of history about the chateau which was very interesting. If you like castle ruins this will be a good attraction for you. Wear good shoes as there is quite a bit of uneven ground and uneven steps. We went in April so the weather was very comfortable.

My husband has muscular dystrophy in his calves only. He can walk, but not fast, and very steep inclines or lots of steps in a row are difficult. Do you think he could visit the chateau and just go at a slow pace? Help - sorry for late notice. We are planning to go tomorrow.

No. Very steep to ascend. Yes if you visit restaurant across the road from the base entrance to the village. The restaurant has a magnificent view of sunset and then of the nightlights illuminating the chateau.

Bonjour,

When does the castle show occur? I can't find info on the times, but hopefully more than once a day. I want to buy the combo Chateau and Carrieres du Lumieres ticket. Does that automatically include the Castle show? Also, any worries about it being sold out in the first or second week of May? Thanks!
Written 28 April 2017
Want to confirm that there is no way to drive up to the Chateaux. For the great views from above, is there a road people drive to that overlooks the ruins? I see there are two entries. I would like to go the Chateau first, so if i do, i can buy a combo up there? I want to go against the stream and do the ruins first, and then head back down and cool off inside the Carrieres de Lumieres. I'll be there on a Sunday.
Written 26 April 2017
You cannot drive all the way up to the Chateau but you can get pretty close! There is public parking for a fee. Carrieres de Lumieres is very close by - no need to move your car! I believe Sundays get quite busy. The countryside is beautiful. Enjoy the drive.
Written 26 April 2017
Where can you purchase the combined ticket for the Carrieres de Lumieres and the Chateau?

At both locations. Just go there and they'll ask if you want the combo
