The Columbia River is a big deal both North and South of the border and the vast wetlands extending up from Invermere in BC through Golden and out past Donald are pretty spectacular. Driving up from Invermere with the river to the West you get an idea of the flood area but it;s not until you get up high that you cab really get an idea of the extent of the wetlands south of Golden BC. The best view is surely from the Top of the Forest Service Road uptowards Mt. 7 from Upper Golden (Near the Cemetery). That's where I took the shot I'm going to try and post here. It's a decent road most of the time and can usually be driven with care in a sedan. It's frequently graded but there are a couple of rough patches. I drove it in an SUV and it was no trouble. At the top is a summit fro the Hadgliders and such light and it is frequent and popular jump off point in the summer.

The Columbia River flows through Golden BC on it's way to the Pacific Ocean. Just south of Golden is a gorgeous wildlife viewing area. We left one car in Golden and then drove to a a little town called Nicholson which is about 9 km south and put our kayaks into the water there. There is small parking area next to the river so it doesn't take much to get down to the bank especially when the water level is high. From there you just basically float down to Golden. It took us about 2 and a half hours but we were battling some winds in our face at times. The views are fabulous especially the birds. We saw at least 3 bald eagles and osprey and herons and more. Outstanding. The best place to park in Golden is at the Airport. There is a small parking area next to a good take-out landing but there are other options. This trip is for everything from a beginner to expert kayak. There is no whitewater. The only thing to watch for are low branches along the bank. Inflatable kayaks can be rented from Selkirk Sports at Kicking Horse Resort for $40 a day. Good deal and easy to inflate.

We have seen the Columbia River, which is 2000 km long, at various places. We liked seeing the river in Golden as well. The views by the one lane bridge are quite scenic.

Beautiful scenery here with the river, the tall fir trees and the mountains all around. Picturesque. Worth a visit.

It is interesting to see the Columbia River here since it is fairly close to the beginning of the river (down in Canal Flats). It is cool to see it later as it moves toward Washington State and Oregon on its way to the Pacific. It is amazing to realize how important this river is to irrigation for such a large area, not to mention generating electricity.

Columbia River in scenic Golden British Columbia is the largest river in the pacific northwest, snaking from the Rocky Mountains.

Breathtaking views with 20 dams and 400 tributaries along it's banks. Great fishing.

On a hot, sunny day in Golden, it is great fun to float the Columbia River. Selkirk Sports, at the base of the gondola at Kicking Horse Mountain Resort, rents inflatable kayaks. Or bring your own canoe, SUP or kayak. BRING A PERSONAL FLOTATION DEVICE. Put in at the Nicholson bridge and take out just past the airport in Golden. What a beautiful way to enjoy this gorgeous valley. Bird life is alway present. If you are lucky, there are some interesting mammals to see as well.

This is the major river of the whole area and is truly impressive. At Revelstoke, where it is crossed by three bridges, it is spectacular and, in certain places, really beautiful.

Spectacular at Revelstoke, at then magnificent near the Lake south of Golden. We were luck to drive in the fall, and the tree colours were to die for, with the mountains as back drop.
Just have to get back there sometime!
