About
The North-West Mounted Police (NWMP) Barracks on Canmore’s Main Street was built in 1893. It served until 1929 as the lodgings, office, and jail for the police officers of Canmore. The Barracks was declared an Alberta Provincial Historic Resource in 1990. It is the oldest NWMP site in Western Canada to still stand on its original location.

This was a fun (free but donations welcome) little stop, right on the main walking area in Canmore. A look back at the past without being boring or overloading on information. Kids can do a scavenger hunt around the building and outside in the gardens. The garden is beautiful and there are bunnies running around. Small gift shop at the back has a bunch of cute souvenirs. I bought the kids little Mounties pins as a reward for finishing the scavenger hunt.

Great little museum with lots of information and displays about the NWMP, its history, and the lives of the people who lived in the barracks. More to see than you'd expect given the size of the building, and all very well presented.
There's a lovely heritage garden at the back, run by a team of volunteers who are all very happy to have a chat about the garden and their work. It was interesting to find out that they're allowed to have a fruit tree in the garden only because it's a heritage variety, whereas fruit trees are heavily discouraged in Canmore to avoid attracting bears which then become too accustomed to being in the town.
It's free, although donations are very welcome.
