- Scott GWashington DC, District of Columbia450 contributionsWell done Auckland! No charge for this park, which we appreciated very much. The garden is huge and you can spend a good chuck of the day here. Quite lovely with good walkways. There is an amazing number of ducks to delight you. Children will like this place, it has a playground and lots of room to run around. Our visit can in early spring, and there was still some lovely color.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 14 October 2023
- Jeremy P192 contributionsA very nice garden: admission free, but expensive to access if you don’t have a vehicleA very fine garden which exceeded expectations. The admission is free, which is lovely; the grounds are great; it’s a great place to spend a couple of hours. The cafe serves good fare. The only shortfall is that if one does not have access to a vehicle, one must use a ride service, and Uber was rather expensive @ about NZD 90.00 / USD 55.00 for the round trip.Visited January 2024Travelled with familyWritten 18 January 2024
- Fiona EColchester, United Kingdom169 contributionsFantastic and all FREELast stop before our flight home and sadly only had an hour and a half. Fantastic garden packed with unusual plants, beautifully labelled hardly a weed in sight. Inspirationally laid out gardens and needs to be visited at different times of year to be fully appreciated. - TonyC_Austin370 contributionsGreat park, comprehensive and well designedWe had a few hours to kill before our evening flight and spent them at the Auckland Botanical Gardens as it is conveniently only a 15-20 minute drive to the airport from there. It is a very large park so we only covered some of it in the 2.5 hrs we spent. It is well designed and fairly comprehensive as far as the plants and tree they have. Even if you you are not into the detailed botantical things, if you like walking around in nicely landscaped parks, this would also be recommended.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 16 May 2024
- Christina R19 contributionsWonderful Morning SpotWe spent a couple hours here, even though we opted to skip a couple places because of how wet the week had been. Even without many of the flowers (we went in winter) the place was still beautiful to see and experience. A nice walk, particularly in the morning.Visited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 26 July 2024

A good morning out for free. However, when you advertise that a sculpture exhibit runs until March 15th why have most of them gone from display already, quite disappointing. Can you not indeed sell them with a pick up date when the exhibition has finished.
Also I do feel that you should have a large donation box as a bit of a sculpture in itself to encourage people to contribute to the upkeep of such a place, something we have said many times at Hamilton Gardens too.

These gardens are very well laid out and have lovely walks with many interesting plants which are all labeled. It was February 2020 when I visited and they had the "Sculpture in the Garden" show which was very interesting. The only complaint I have is that in mid summer it is very hot walking and there are no shade trees along the walkways.

These gardens are fabulous! There is such variety on display, from the Potter's children's garden, to the African Plants garden, Gondwana Arboretum, Edible garden, Podocarp Valley, Native Forest ... to name a few. They are very well laid out and maintained. There are interesting sculptures dotted around. The lawns are suffering in the current dry season, but the beds are still looking attractive. The lake is a lovely feature. The staff at the information centre are very friendly and helpful. Admission is free! Wear your walking shoes as the gardens cover a vast area. You can take a picnic to enjoy on the grass or there is a cafe open daily from 8 a.m. until 4p.m. A visit here is highly recommended - you could spend a whole day wandering around these gardens!

Recently I met friends for lunch at the Cafe at the Auckland Botanic Gardens. The day was fine, the lunch palatable, and the Sculpture Exhibition well worth viewing. Even without the extra interest of the exhibition, the Gardens are wonderful to wander in, with friends or family or by yourself. It's one of Auckland's precious gems, a well-developed piece of land full of beauty and space for meandering. The planting is extensive and on-going; also there's the element of teaching and learning about native plants, birds and stream creatures. Children and adults alike find interest and enjoyment there. It's a place to take visitors; to be proud of and to revisit with every changing season.

Thanks for you response. It is important to us that visitors can come and enjoy the beauty of the gardens and we take the chance to share our ideas with them. As a place for plant and garden advice we work hard to make information available. We also love providing activity ideas for families so we can introduce kids to nature in a fun way.
Hope we provide another great experience when you next visit.

We had a great strategy to visit - because of its location near the airport, we left extra time on the day we were returning the car to the airport and flying to the south island - we were driving from Waipu that morning. Traffic was not worse than expected, so we had an hour to enjoy the gardens before heading to the airport.
We enjoyed the sculpture show, the grounds are nicely maintained and easy to navigate. Definitely could have spent more than the one hour we had here.
We know another season may have yielded more flowers but that just means we have to come back.

A very fine garden which exceeded expectations.
The admission is free, which is lovely;
the grounds are great; it’s a great place to spend a couple of hours.
The cafe serves good fare.
The only shortfall is that if one does not have access to a vehicle, one must use a ride service, and Uber was rather expensive @ about NZD 90.00 / USD 55.00 for the round trip.

We walked around only some of this as it is huge. The mid day sun made it more of a challenge than we wanted but it was really beautiful. The garden is free to visit and has a wide array of plants, trees and flowers. Would recommend a visit.

My wife and I visited here and enjoyed every moment. Plenty to see and nearly all wheelchair accessible, it’s FREE entry which we weren’t expecting. There is a lovely cafe serving excellent food and drinks, well worth a visit when in Auckland

Check with the website, but I think that the gardens will be open (they are not 'gated') but I suspect that the visitor centre will be closed.

how could I get there without a car ? public transportation ?
Written 17 January 2016
Hi,
Yes, you can get here using public transport.
Depending on where you are coming from, it's probably easiest to catch a train to Manurewa, and then take a bus, or walk (approximately 20 minutes) to the Gardens.
We hope to see you soon!
