What a hidden gem on Auckland's Wild West Coast.

Looking around it's easy to imagine that not a lot has changed here over the last 200 years. Rugged hills and valleys covered in native bush form the back drop to the large sandy beach and wild surf. Karekare is 32km a 60 minute drive from Auckland CBD, once you hit the car park you have a few minutes walk... More

It was rainy and windy when we went and we had to take our shoes off to avoid getting them soaking wet on the walk to the beach but it was worth it. There was a waterfall on the opposite side of the parking lot you can get to via a short walk which was also beautiful. On a nice... More

It was a very windy day and the beach was deserted. It was a lovely place to visit and the short walk to the Karekare waterfall was worthwhile. It was so peaceful at the waterfall and also a great photo opportunity.

After a precarious drive down to the beach (very narrow road and some one way spots with cyclists!), we made our way to the beach to watch the waves and take a few pictures. The power of the sea was amazing.

Auckland is an incredible coastal city. Less than an hour away from CBD but driven through beautiful both town and country with glimpses of coast. The roads are well signposted Karekare is wild& beautiful beach, like all the west coast beaches. It is quieter than its more well known neighbour Piha. During summer it will have lifeguards but by late... More

Karekare Beach and the Karekare water fall is a magic peaceful place to go for the day. Do not swim at the beach is very bad for under tow and swift currents, but swim at the Waterfall. You need a car there are no public transport to this remote place. Famous movies have been made here, one is Piano but... More

Karekare beach is a black sand beach, due to high iron content which is because of the volcanic origin. The beach is mysteriously beautiful! It's one of those places which you'll never forget. The moment you walk into the beach, you'll be amazed by the magnificence of the place. It's not far from Auckland and is a must see!

One of the most spectacular beaches I have seen. Sharp huge rocks plunging into the beach. A wading creek. Waves. Lots of sand. Some don't like grey sand. Doesn't bother me.

This is the most beautiful beach we visited during our North Island visit. The black sandy beach is soft and warm to walk on . Water is crystal clear! It is not as crowded as Piha so a good alternative if you wish to enjoy the peace. There is no shops nearby so bring your own food. It can be... More

A great black sand beach with towering rock formations. Just a short walk up the hill to a lovely waterfall with swimming hole. Perfect. No shops so bring your own food and water. Take care on the narrow winding road down to the area
