Very old and tired and hardly any of the photos of the hotels really look like this anymore - furniture is old and moldy and tired - staff doesn't seem to care at all and rubbish everywhere. Basically not a single decent place to eat except the You & Me Hotel and Beach Walk Hotel (both have awesome food and service and pool and clean). Otherwise super disappointing.

Staying at Beach Walk on Longset Beach! Fantastic spot. Amazing staff. Feel so lucky to be here.
Discovered Aussie Le Thai Restaurant and now we have eaten EVERY lunch there.
The Thai Green Currey. The Margaritas--All lime/seltzer and Tequila. Perfect.
Papaya Salad. Tom Yum Soup. Whole steamed ginger fish!
Fantastic week. CHECK IT OUT! on Booking.com

Great place to visit with beautiful beaches. We had a lot of fun letting the kids play on the beach.

Beautiful island. White sand beach. Clear blue, warm sea, water. No one hassles you to buy anything. Quiet but enough people for fun.

Koh Rong after COVID. What's happened on the island.
I want to start off by saying, if you are thinking about going, go!! It's worth it.
We visited in 2019 and were met by a mostly undeveloped, paradise Island with plenty of places to eat and stay. There wasn't much to do though.
We revisited again this year (NOV 22). Since COVID , a lot of the beach side business have closed but that hasn't left the island without a great choice of places to stay. It's has, however, reduced the amount of places where you can go for a meal.
The biggest change to the island is the arrival of a concrete road that joins all the villages and most of the resort's. This means you can explore the island without needing to hire a boat. Mopeds can be hired anywhere for $10-$15 for the full day. If you are staying for more than one day, I highly recommend hiring a moped and hiting the road.
Business seem to be reopening but there is no where near the amount there was pre COVID.
As always, the Khmer people are friendly and honest. You don't need to worry about getting ripped off or robbed.
Koh Touch remains the hub of the island where you can get everything. Police beach is dead. If you're looking for a party, head to Nest beach.
We stayed at Treehouse Bungalows not far from Koh Touch. They offer great value luxury.
Accommodation remains cheap on the island. Prices range from $40-$80 a nigh for A/C luxury to $10-$20 a night for shared accommodation or basic bungalow.
There are a few boat trips available, I recommend staying away from the $12 trips advertised everywhere. Instead, ask hotel staff for guides that run private tours. They are more expensive at $25+ pp but worth it.
Best places to eat(I my opinion):
Treehouse Bungalows - Good selection of western and Khmer food. A bit more expensive.
Jungle bar - The best food on their side of the island. Very fresh, you have to wait a bit longer but always fresh. Very cheap. Owned by westerners.
Nest Beach - Simple menu but fresh, fast, and cheap.
Buffalo's - Not as good as it was before COVID but still great food at a reasonable price.
Island life is still unique and time just slips away.
If you are traveling from Phnom Penh, the expressway has now been finished so you can get to Sihanoukville in under 3 hours($12 Toll). A far cry from the 5+ hours before the expressway.

Stayed at the Tree House Bungalows for a wedding anniversary. 10/10 would recommend based on price for value and beach front views.
Worth renting a scooter for a day or two to explore the island. The roads are 50% developed so you will be on a rough, muddy, dirt road at times. But 100% worth it to visit the beaches.
Would highly recommend the Italian restaurant on the island, as well as the food at Nest. Food at Tree house was tasty but a bit more $$.
Would recommend the night swim for the bioluminescent algae. About 200 feet from shore on the south side we swam off the boat and while you can hardly capture it with your phone it felt like you were swimming in a sea of fireflies. They lit up more the more you agitated your hands and feet.
Plumbing services and garbage on the island are rudimentary. Due to lack of infrastructure sewage is straight to the ocean, and garbage is burned as there is not pick up.
Would recommend for a visit and we recommend you bring a pharmacy of medications with you to Cambodia! While the food was tasty, our digestive systems certainly got a workout!

Wow just Wow. Do your homework. Very little credit card facilites and only one money exchange. On high tide you walk to most accom places in the water. Motorbikes are really the only form of transport. The beaches are just amazing and we live on a beach at home. Totally stunning

We visited Koh rong in April 2022, it is a beautiful island, 40 min boat ride from Sihanoukville. But a trek from Siem Reap. We can tell it is currently a skeleton of its former self. Post pandemic it is clearly been hit hard. the tourist dependant island has some run downs bars, abandoned businesses on 4k beach and maintenance is needed from top to toe. Coming here will help the locals, so spend lots of money - they need it.
• Travel / Ferry (40mins) from Sihanoukville to Main Beach. We paid $25 open return ticket per person. We got the night bus from Siem Reap.
• Resturants - We stayed 6 days and went to Encafe (great italian), Tree House (lovely bar on beach walk past white beach), Nest Beach Club (Amazing burgers / young traveller vibes / parties / cheap beer) and grabbed street food some days.
• Night / Nightmare Bus - Siem Reap - Sihanoukville Nightmare - 12 hrs of tec music, noisy bus drivers, horns being honked every 3-5 seconds, bumpy roads, over 1,000+ stops and a crazy bus driver - we didnt sleep at all/but we survived)
• Travelling Around the Island?
You can walk some of it, but a motorbike is needed $10 per day, rent from main beach/ near pier. Or boat Taxis.Or enjoy the area you are staying in.
• Where to stay? Depending on budget, you can pay £200+ per night for a resort, or you can do £25 per night for a basic beach front bungalow (like we did)
• Shops: Pharmarcies, Snacks, Clothes, Street Food, All your essentials are here - but at a premium. Expect to pay more as they had to transport it here.
******TOP TIPS*****
• Bring high level DEET spray. You will be eaten alive by Sandflies & mosquitoes as all the accomodation is mainly on the beach front.
• Bring CASH* no where takes credit cards and there is NO ATM!!
• Get a room with A/C.
• Bring Handsanitiser, not everywhere has sinks or handwashing facilities.

For me its must visit place in Cambodia and one should spend at least 2-3 nights here. Now there are many places and hotels around and it depends upon your budget and kind of adventure your looking at
a) Luxury - Royal Sands
b) Nature lover - Lonely planet resort
c) Culture lover - Homestay at PREK SVAY village
So multiple options and multiple activities to do. You got white sand beaches, skin sand beaches, beaches with jungles, multiple trekking tracks, multiple cycling tracks and obviously many sea activities (depending upon where your staying)
Highly recommended if travelling to Cambodia

I’m going to Koh Rong with my 12 yo daughter next week. Can I know how to go to the island from the airport? How’s the ferry schedule like as our flight will be in the afternoon. And any recommendation for place to stay? With nice beach and of course safe for 2 of us :)
Thank you,
Nurul

Would you go to Koh Rong in August? It looks lovely but I'm wondering if we can snorkel if its rainy season?

JCasson, you welcome :)
One more thing I should to notice you is sandfly (or sand fly) - I've meet them on some nice empty beaches of Koh Rong and I'm was not glad (but they are was pretty, pretty much glad!).
Remember: their bites are causes of crazy itchy.
Take any good local balm or protection (with high concentrations of DEET or picaridin) and never, just never scratch these bites!
Have a nice and safe trip! :)

Ciao a tutti,
Grazie mille

Hi guys, thanks for the useful reviews about Koh Rong. i have a question, is it will be worth going to Koh rong if im traveling alone? i have never done this before, is it easy to make new friends on the way?

Yes it’s a must do. I went alone and was Devine. Make sure you stay along the front beach though as at night its scary to walk through jungle with no lights, alone.

Hi Tara, thanks for your review. Is it a young place? I'm going to be travelling by myself and am (a young) 57 year old women. Would it be OK for me?
Many thanks

Could you please:
- Advise me the websites of all boat operators to & from this island, along with Koh Rong Samloem? or...
- Give me advice for my case: I will be in the Sihanoukville area from 25 to 28Nov. I plan to spend 2 days 26 & 27 on the 2 Koh Rong islands. So which island should I go first to take advantage of the boat schedule & tickets? How to experience both the speed boat & the party boat? BTW, is the plankton trip worth it in Nov?
CFEIII
Center, TX4,863 contributions
I took the speed boat both times I went to Koh Rong, caught an inter island to Samloem. Round trip to Koh Rong is $20.00, inter island is $5.00. or you can continue on the Speed ferry to Samloem. It is an hour (speed ferry) vs a 2.5 hour trip on the slow boat. There is a party everywhere you look, but also romantic spots without so much noise, both are nice in their own way. Plankton was limited about 6 weeks ago, maybe slightly more last week, be sure to have a mask and snorkel, it is entirely different view than what you see from the surface. Some of the resorts do a free plankton trip each night (Palm Tree Resort did), I also did a day tour from Koh Rong and it included a sunset/plankton viewing... we did a night dive for Plankton, got back to the island about 8:00 pm.
