High up in the mountain lies the village of Mochos which though small, yet has 14 churches and a population of only a couple of thousands. The locals welcome you with open arms and provide you with info about the village. The cafés and restaurants are of a high standard.A taxi usually costs 20 euros from Stalis but we got one for 15 by bargaining and we walked down following the Bulgarian trail. What an interesting experience

We visited the village of Mochos (Moxou) as part of our drive around this very hilly part of north Crete, we started from Old Hersonnissos (a lovely old/small village) and drove the Road 92 towards Gonies, takes you past a very large Aqua Plus Water Park, the scenery is great and takes you past a damn/reservoir, There are a number of viewing points where you can take photos of the valley etc. from Gonies we headed towards Mochos and had a first hand experience of village life in the mountains of Crete. It is a very picturesque place with the traditional centre that houses various good restaurants as well as a beautiful old church. Walking around the village you can see the typical style of village houses with their entrances decorated by various potted flowering plants and local herbs.
We then continued north until will hit the VOAK route 90 which took us back to Heraklion.

every Wednesday, get a cab (20 euros each way for 4) for around 7:30 - 8pm, and head for the hills! Mochos is the place to be.
Grad a seat & order your meal at one of the restaurants in the town square & prepare to relax & enjoy around 2 - 3 hours greek music & dancing, provided (free) by the local children & adults of this small village.
Wonderful !
The restaurant will grab you a cab to get you back down the mountain.
Enjoy

Visited mohos by car and quad on our way to Zeus cave. Lovely village square with cafes and a church. Wandered around the streets and discover little houses with beautiful flowers, a sweeney Todd style hairdressers.greek men sitting outside cafes happy to wave and say hello. Shops and cafes for refreshments. On our way out mohos we saw a sign for a cave so followed it and had a little explore. We had a great time here .

Crete is fine island. Go there if you travel to Greece. I was there at date 4 - 12.7 2013. I have been there 13 times during 11 years and it is always nice to go there again. Crete is a good alternative. I am sure that you will like this island. There are nice and friendly local people, good food and the atmosphere is fine on the island. There is much history to see. Fine sand beaches at many points of the island. I will go there again next summer.
