The easiest way to cover all the scattered sights in Srirangapatna is to hire a local guide. Our guide covered all the important sights, and provided a lot of background information and context that helped us to better appreciate the sights. He also invariably knew the best spots and angles to take pictures:-)
The story behind the dungeons is interesting and it is worth a 30 minutes visit at least. Also, there is a nice spot here from where you can take pictures with Kaveri river visible in the background.

Small place, visit takes a minute or two. Just interesting to see a person spent time in this small room.

This is basically a prison built by Hyder Ali and used by him and Tippu Sultan to keep their enemies imprisoned. It is located on the banks of Cuvery. The prisoners would be tortured by tying their hands to walled rings and submerging them up to their necks in water. Good for short visit if one has time.

Tipu used the place to confine British officers and the place still bears the signs of torturing device. It is in basement and there is a flight of stairs. Strong bat smell pervades the area. It is creepy and sad. If there are children in your group be prepared to answer some difficult questions. In short, skip it!

A jail without doors is unusual but when you see the natural restrictions to escape you realise why doors are not needed.

This is one place where there seems to be a reversal of history as known by us. yes, this place was maintained to imprison & torture British prisoners. Owned by Tippu Sultan. The guide there explained to us on how the British soldiers were chained nude in this dungeon with water from the Cauvery River, flowing just behind this dungeon, being let in through a niche and filled upto their necks. The 8000 tonnes cannon gifted to Tippu from the British army is also strategically placed in the dungeons.

When we went, the place was maintained neat & clean, unlike the usual places where we see lot of crap strewn around. The best part is that there is no Entry fee for this location. It is a free for all.

Just north of Sri Ranganatha Swamy temple is Captain Bailey's Dungeon which was used to imprison British officers. It is a brick and mortar construction just below ground level and has iron hooks embedded into the stone slabs for the officers to be tied and tortured. You also have the view of the river Cauvery flowing just next to the place.

I still feel there is very little information available about this place and would be better if more information could be made available to the visitors.

Not just a dungeon as when the prisoners were chained to the wall standing in a Christ pose the dungeon was filled with water up to chin height so you could basically never sleep.

More information at the site would help.

This is the place where British prisoners of war were kept by Tipu Sultan. The prison also served as the ground for torturing the British prisoners/killing them by filling the room with cauvery water and having them submerged in the water. The place is not well maintained. Strict actions necessary to improve on maintenance.
