What a lovely place. The Meoto Iwa Shinto shrine’s white torii on the water, the two rocks tied together symbolizing eternal love is such a romantic spot, no matter how many people are around. And yes, the sunset has the best light for breathtaking photos. There is a paid parking area few steps in the opposite side of the road.

Cute and romantic spot - can get some great pictures if the sun is shining. We came in winter so was relatively quiet but still fun

As I was a child, I visited Futamigaura in Ise, near Ise Jingu. And I learned now that there is another Futamigaura in Itoshima. Oh! It is beautiful! Many people come here to take pictures. Nearby there are also fashionable coffee shops and restaurants. Just to walk along the coast, it worth going there. If you use a public transportation, it is convenient to take a bus from JR Kyudai Gakkentoshi station and get off at the last stop. You can spend a whole day in this area.

The moment we arrived in Fukuoka we arranged a car to take us to Itoshima about 45 minutes away and Sakurai Futamigaura is our first stop. The “couple rock” with the Torii gate is beautiful. The rocks are in the middle of the sea and about 150 meter from the beach. They are linked by a rope that symbolizes a happy marriage. During low tide in May the rope will be replaced with a new one. We went there in the morning.
The place is popular for sun set viewings.

When people talk about Itoshima, a small and relaxing place where the city folk like to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life for a day or even just a half a day considering its close proximity, ultimately the one place everyone wants to visit and get the obligatory photo is Couples Rock.
Couples Rock is a beautiful sunset scenic spot right on the Genkai Sea. This place has been selected as one of Japan’s 100 most scenic places and during summer when the days are at their longest, the final view of the sunset between the 2 rocks will leave a strong and lasting impression on even the least romantic people in this world.

Couples Rock is connected by a large Shimenawa (rope) which is 30 metres in length and weighs 1 tonne. The male rock is 11.8 metres high and the female rock is 11.2 metres in height. Shimenawa is a thick, twisted, straw rope that in ancient times, was believed to have the power to ward off evil sprits or was used to cordon off sacred area as a talisman and as a result many objects connected with Shinto Shrines are decorated with these types of ropes.

Itoshima is also loaded with cafes, restaurants and places of nature, so you can see why it is becoming the stamping ground for the Fukuoka community as a place to recharge and refresh and in many cases retire from the rat race or live out a more peaceful existence.

When people talk about Itoshima, the first thing that will come to their mind is Futamigaura. It's a very popular spot for water sport, especially during the summer months. Along the coastline, you will find several restaurants and cafes. Even if you are not into sports or enjoying some food while watching the ocean (if this is even possible), the drive to Futamigaura by car itself is just awesome. The only thing that's kind of a mood killer is that during summer months it's pretty crowded.

Looks like okinawa, but much closer to fukuoka. Perfect for coffee and a sunset. Filled with bikers, joggers, and kids.

It’s a nice end to a day trip at Itoshima. The view of the shrine with the couple rock is beautiful and worth the drive there. There are a few cafes along the stretch you can have a cuppa and wait for sunset

Nice shrine with nice beach area around it where you can relax, SUP, surf and eat. Read up on the background story to fully appreciate it. Able to get there from Fukuoka by public transport by first taking the orange kuko subway in Fukuoka which changes into JR to Chikuzen and get off at Kyudai-Gakkentoshi. From there you can take the bus from platform 3 (630 ¥ - 45 min), Nishinoura line until the final station. The bus drives along the shore, which gives nice views. From the end station it is a 20 minute walk along the road next to coast line. Its quite a nice beach area with restaurants where you can eat and drink. You can also rent SUP and surf boards for 1000 ¥ per hour. Last bus back on weekdays is around 1900. Enjoy!
