A key anchor attraction of the Hunter, Maitland Gaol has a vibrant history spanning more than 150 years. After housing some of Australia's most hardened and notorious criminals, Maitland Gaol closed as a Correctional Institution in 1998. Unlock the gates today, with visitors invited to 'serve time' learning about the facility, past prisoners and daring escapes. Open 7 days, Maitland Gaol offers visitors the opportunity to indulge in a world class self guided audio tour. Additionally, themed guided day tours and torchlight tours by night are regularly available and are a great way to interpret this unique attraction. If you have any questions about Maitland Gaol, please contact our Customer Service team or send us an email and we will be happy to get back to you as soon as possible with the information you require. We look forward to welcoming you to Maitland Gaol soon.

History comes alive when you can be transported to the place and times it happened. The stories of convicts, their crimes, their treatment (sometime cruel and unusual), their escapes and executions, and ultimately the end of an era provide a riveting tale!
