just a short bus trip from Beijing CBD is the great wall of China. A wonder by all meanings of the word. Weather you appreciate History, Architecture or culture the great wall will simply wow and overwhelm you. Its larger that it looks on photos, higher and physically more challenging to climb that videos or photos can ever show. the market place at the bottom with food, artifacts and memorabilia's is a wonder o its own. You can never claim to have seen China if you never visited the great wall.

A few hours drive north-east of Dalian is the eastern end of the Great Wall of China. If you saw the new movie starring Matt Damon, you will want to see The Great Wall. Easier than a trip to Beijing is the trip from Dalian to Dandong. There's a driver named Autumn who is Chinese and speaks English who will take you there and back, with stops at the Friendship Bridge and The Broken Bridge, as well as a North Korean restaurant in Dandong, not to mention an exciting river trip, all in just one day.

The bus leaves from in front of the train station and costs 5 yuan. It drops you in front of the entrance. The site was nice but only took 1 hour to visit and nothing compared to the other Great Wall sites I visited. While the wall is steep, it is well made with good footing and hand rails and I did it in sandals. I have attached the bus time schedule I took on the bus. I assume it is correct because my bus left at 8:35 and I returned on the 11.

So much easier to walk than the Beijing sector as cleverly renovated. No crowns Lovely scenery and we were privileged to see a beautifully dressed couple posing for photographs

We booked a cab driver here at RMB 60 an hour. It is about half an hour of coastal scenic drive here from the city. My husband paid half price for entrance fee as he is 63 years old. We paid RMB 10 for the tram ride both ways as we were told that it is quite a distance to get to the entrance if we managed to complete the climb.
The initial part is gradual and as the weather was very fine that day, we decided to push on even though it is steep at some parts. There are many steps but we just did it at our own pace. We felt a sense of achievement when we finally completed the walk. We took about 1 hr 15 mins with much resting and photo taking. We were glad and thankful to catch the transport back to the starting point. There is a small road near there which leads to the "one foot across" which is the closest point to North Korea. However there are fences on both sides. Funnily, I managed to access my whatsapp at some point up in the Great Wall.

This section of wall has been totally rebuilt in the style of parts of The Great Wall on the basis that they did find some evidence that a wall of some sort once existed there. Nevertheless it is impressive and worth a visit if you are in Dandong.
We got a taxi for the local fixed price of 200RMB, which takes you north along the west bank of the Yalu river for about 10 miles (20 mins) until you come to the first little mountain on the right: that's where the wall is. It was a freezing day in December and the extravagant main entrance was closed but the taxi took us to another entrance at the northern end of the wall and waited for up to 1 hour (included in the price). You'll easily spot where to get off if you get the bus
We were the only ones there and so had the place to ourselves, which was lovely. The snow and ice on the wall made going tough but, unlike the real wall, the steps are all uniform height and the surface is even. The wall meanders south from the car park with about 5 towers before climbing almost vertically to the top of the mountain: we didn't venture that far in the 1 hour that we had, although I felt that we'd seen enough: there are good views over the river into the nothingness of North Korea.

I've never been to the Great Wall and don't know if I will get the chance to see other, more photographed parts. But, at least I can say I've been on the Great Wall, and it was nice (although cold) to do it without hoards of tourists to contend with. It was actually pretty deserted except for our and a couple other tour buses. Although the wall and structures have been restored and spruced up, it's OK. It's still the Wall and still historically significant. It's not so photogenic as the parts of it north of Beijing, I'm told. You don't see the wall winding off into the mountains here like in many photos. But, it's still a nice experience. Near the wall you can also get within a step or two of North Korea. Just climb over the fence and get shot. I'd recommend visitors to the Dandong area include a visit to this part of the Great Wall.

We took a taxi to the wall from Dandong. It cost 50RMB for the taxi. He drove us to buy tickets at the gate. You should get out of your taxi at this point otherwise they will charge you to park your car (10RMB extra - we got caught with this). Also, the cost of the ticket is 60RMB per person + they charge an extra 10RMB for a separate ticket to a museum I believe which we never saw so we didn't use the ticket. A few wasted RMB unfortunately but we learnt.
A note - buy water if you need it before you enter the wall. There is one stall right at the very top but on a hot day, you will need it well before then!
The wall itself is really great. Very few tourists (in comparison to other parts of the wall in China) visit which makes it really pleasant and you can get some great photos without other people 'ruining the beauty' by standing in your way. This is the 4th part of the wall we have seen (also been to Mutianyu, Juimenkou, Old Dragon Head). There are very steep spots and I didn't feel comfortable taking my young son all the way up. My husband went the entire track. The views were breathtaking. It is probably the closest you will ever get to North Korea. My husband had a brief conversation with one of the NK soldiers who was searching bushland for defectors. He said it was a great experience.
Our biggest issue with this place:
Believing that this is a major tourist attraction (which it is), we thought there would be plenty of taxi's to take us back to Dandong. We waited for a very long time and not one taxi drove past. We thought we were stranded. We were very lucky to find a group of Chinese tourists who helped us. They told us about a public bus which comes hourly (outside the gates of the wall, in the town - heading back towards Dandong). It costs 4RMB per person but be quick! It fills up quickly.
It is worth the trip but would be much better if you had transport arranged!

Having only been previously to the Mutianyu section of the Great Wall near Beijing, it was interesting to visit a very different and remote part of this greatest of walls in the world. Refreshing also to experience a section of 长城 that was NOT overflowing with zillions of climbing tourists which made it necessary to have to keep dodging people on the steps. There were large numbers at the Tiger Mountain Wall but not like in Mutianyu or Juyong Pass in Beijing. The only part of the walk that became a slight bottleneck was two-thirds of the way up to the summit where we had to queue up to climb a set of very steep and narrow stairs. As I expected, some of the wall’s floor surface was in better condition than others, but it was all still perfectly walkable. From the highest lookout point there are commanding views across the border into the wide, unpopulated fields of North Korea. The descent down from the summit is mostly very steep. At the foot of the stairs on the eastern (border) side is a raised battlement area containing the relics of a couple of mounted guns that are several centuries past their use-by date. The end-point of the Hushan Wall walk has two refreshment stations for you to buy a cool drink after a hot summer day’s exertions climbing the wall. Distance views of the Wall’s peak from the road on the northern-western side of the site provide good photo opportunities.
