An easy walk across a man-made path though a series of outcrops and boulders made of basalt sitting on clays. A unique geological structure. The rocks are eroded (flutted) as a result of the decomposition of acidic trees. A bit of an effort to get to but certainly interesting. Make sure to take food and water, not necessarily because the... More

This attraction was recommended by the host of the place we were staying and it was worth the trip. It was a 40 minute drive from Rawene where we were staying, and a gravel road for about the last 10kms. We were greeted by the woman who along with her husband had built the bridges and walkways through their land... More

We only found out about this by reading a regional guide book. Yes - a bit off the beaten track but spectacular and we should have allowed more than an hour to walk one of the longer tracks. Need to be fit and not afraid of clambering

Was disappointed. Was quite expensive for what it was. While I do appreciate the work and enthusiasm, even though I enjoy walks - and this was a short and easy one - this isn't one I'd recommend going out of your way for.

We had a lovely time wandering through the amazing rock formations and reading the information in the little centre. Unfortunately there was nobody on hand to provide any anecdotal details.

A very quiet walk through spectacular rock formations. A little bit off the beaten track but well worth it. Well priced. Great experience.

We could stay with our Campervan on the parking spot of the area. Felix told everything about the area. He and his wife litterally build the path with stairs and everything through the park. The was really well build and had some adventurous obstacles. For 15 Nzd we could stay there overnight(incl good toilets) and entrance in to the park.... More

Hadn't really done any research on this, just saw some photos on Pinterest and decided to call in. We were not prepared - wearing jandals and carrying handbags is probably not ideal! Mental note - proper walking shoes should be kept in the car at all times... However we did stop and talk to Felix, what a guy, so inspiring,... More

This walk among the boulders is down right fascinating. Take the walk to the look out, it is well worth it. Amazing to think how these boulders were formed.

Went to Wairere Boulders on our way through to see Tane Mahuta and as we didn't realise that the walk took as long as it did, we didn't go. However the lovely owner, a Swiss chap whose name I can't recall, spent more than half an hour just talking to us about the area, his qualifications and arriving in New... More
