According to legend, the monastery was named Vodoča after the Battle of Belasica (1014), which was a decisive battle between the armies of Emperor Samuel and Byzantine Emperor Basil II. By order of the Byzantine emperor, 14,000 of Samuel's soldiers were blinded, so that every hundredth soldier was left with one eye to guide the others. The monastery is perfectly preserved, but there are not many frescos. The road to it is very good.

This could be the most enjoyable church/monastery I’ve ever been in. It’s beautiful inside and out. Quiet, peaceful, intriguing. Don’t miss it. And if you’re into construction, the brick work is fascinating.

We visited the Monastery of St Leontius this November. It has been recently rebuilt/renovated. A very well-kept place, beautiful scenery. Although this is not our favorite Monastery in this region, it is worth a visit.

The beautiful Monastery of St Leontius is located in Strumica, in the small, but beautiful village of Vodocha.

Solitude, and time for remembrance and hope, as I wandered in and around this beautiful property all alone on a dreary Feb afternoon. After the crowds @ Naum the day before this was a welcome respite. A must see when visiting this beautiful country.

I went to St Leontius mainly to see the frescoes, but for some reason there wasn't anybody about and I didn't go inside. (The taxi driver would have gone in in any case, but I didn't think it would be right.) Anyway, it gave me more time to wander round the beautiful gardens (more extensive than at Sv. Bogdorica, and even greener) and to enjoy the decorative brickwork on the older parts of the complex.

(If possible go when the sun is very low in the sky, bringing out the warmth of the bricks and stones and tiles, making the ancient walls and roofs glow.)

And I enjoyed the journey there too - the enormous storks' nests on the telegraph poles, the taxi-driver explaining how you could tell whether a church was Methodist or Orthodox (with one, the tower is detached from the main building, with the other not), the lanes of the Roma village just before we got to the monastery, another village where the postmaster opened the post-office to sell me some stamps....

I'll go again, and this time I'll see the frescoes.
