The views are already great at lake shore, but wait till you get up to the mt Robert. It's a bit of pain to get there, and equally to descent back, but well worth it. If you're in on good shape, the mt Robert circuit will take you 2 - 3 hours. I did walk some of the Robert Ridge... More

We completed an extended version of the Travers Sabine circuit over New Year 2016/17 starting in St Arnaud we tramped via Mt Robert carpark to Coldwater Hut for a leisurely 1st day followed by a very cold swim off the jetty. The 2nd day was up the Travers Valley to Upper Travers Hut, again a quick dip in the nearby... More

Lovely place when it's sunny, but the amount of sand flies is annoying! Make sure to pack lots of insect repellent. Doc office there is useless with regards to bookings as we booked a powered site for camping, only to find it was on gravel. The lady said powered sites are for campervans only generally - which is bull and... More

Visited today and armed with some maps from the DoC visitor centre, drove up Mount Robert Road and was impressed by the scenery, the vegetation and the number and variety of trails. Walked a bit at the top and was most impressed with the bird chorus at mid-afternoon. Went to the nearby Teetotal mountain bike trails and did the ski... More

I did the Traverse Sabine circuit with a few friends over the course of 6 nights and would recommend this track to anyone interested in longer hikes or looking to get into more multi-day tracks. The views are absolutely incredible and the diversity of scenery is amazing... even over a week, it's hard to get bored. All of us were... More

My husband and I recently spent three days exploring the beautiful Nelson Lakes NP with Southern Wilderness guide Angus. We were based at the Alpine Lodge in St Arnaud. The hospitality here was second to none. Our delicious breakfasts sustained us for our active days. Our nightly meals, shared with Angus, were both hearty and satisfying.Angus' company was much appreciated and enjoyed. During our time... More

Brilliant walk, definately need moderate to good fitness levels. This is a five hour tramp if you ford the Travers River at the head of the lake, but beware the levels can be high if there as been recent rainfall. If it is too deep and swift you need to carry on to the swing bridges (there are three) to... More
