I have been here 4 years ago but the market got worse. Cheap clothes, plastic toys, food sellers, nothing special, just crappy. Seriously: the best place here is a 7-eleven.....

Nothing much for shopping !! Not many shops and something to eat. But there is 7-11 over here. It is quite new immigration compare with others. There is beautiful temple close by.

We visited Chong Mek with a driver from a hotel in ubon. We decided to take the opportunity to visit the market across the boarder at Laos.

It is important to check the visa requirements to make the crossing at Laos. Many nationalities can get a visa on arrival. We are Australian and found that the fee charged significantly exceeded the advertised fee shown on the notice boards. Suspect we were being ripped off but what choice did we have as we had already passed through immigration from Thailand and needed the visa processed to get back. The whole process took an unreasonable amount of time.

The market was of little interest and really is is not worth crossing just to visit the market. Vendors selling alcohol, cigarettes, knives and suspicious items were prolific.

We have a souvenir visa in our passport to commemorate our visit to Laos but it was expensive and doesn't come with any good memories.

The Market is past its best. The old style "antique" shops are mostly gone and, replaced with cheap clothing or other fake goods. Its a fun couple of hours but, really, the only purpose that Chong Mek serves is - to get into Lao.
Some nice little eateries and, a couple of easy style tea ./ coffee stalls but... nothing to rave about.
If you go to Lao, don't purchase animals or jungle plants, orchids etc. Your only exacerbating the misery and destruction of beautiful Lao
