It was built during Vijayanagara Empire. Most Noteworthy structures inside the Royal Enclosure are Mahanavami Dibba (8 metre high Pyramidal Platform where Dussera and other major festivities used to be held), Pushkarni (Stepped Tank for ceremonial purposes), Underground/Secret Chamber (for important meetings and discussions) and King's Audience Hall (Used for Hearings by the King)

This is said to be a place where the animals were kept by the king.. Mostly war animals or only elephants is unclear.. But the structures built show the respect and love the king had for not only his subjects but also his animals.. The enclosure is all the way inside the big ground called the king's grounds..

Royal Enclosures at Hampi was probably the seat of power, with all the ministerial offices and meeting places. Elaborate and grand plan of the place is simply beyond imagination.

Guides have limit to what they can share, and the display boards show minimal info... so interested visitors go back with desire to know more but no one to tell. We need to get better at telling story of our glorious past.

The water tank is designed with perfection. Great inspiration to our young architects. Each stone has a carving in which the number as well as a name is given. It is carefully arranged to give symmetric perfection.

Everything is ruined here, almost nothing has even pillars, only the granite bases have been left. The enclosure will take you approx 1-2 hours. You can see the solid stone main doors, the stones with small embrasures cut into them to help break them down, the navami dibba, step well and royal guest accomodation. Shade is a problem here, so make sure you have hats, sunscreen and water

The step well in the Royal offices enclosure has to be seen to be believed. It is fantastic. It was discovered as late as 1986 during an archaeological dig because before that it was fully covered with sand and mud. It was a storage place for water in the sixteenth century and multiple sets of steps lead down to it. The beauty of the well is that each and every stone is numbered so that the whole thing can be taken apart and put together like a huge jigsaw puzzle.

Hampi Royal Enclosure

The most beautiful structure in this area is the Stepped Tank and it reminded me much of Modhera Sun Temple’s tank! There’s an inlet of water and an elevated water passage! One is not allowed to to below the stairs

The wide space once held palaces with sandalwood fittings. And all the other stuff that kept the royals in comfort. Now only the granite foundations remain. Marvel at their scale and the intricate carvings on the hard stone. Rows of elephants and horses
Damsels and Gods, and mythical creatures
The elephant stables are quite well preserved and beautiful in their symmetry.
The stories about how the city took five days to raze are haunting but speak of a place that thrived to become one of the country’s richest kingdoms and even today is rich in its ruins that are sculptural and architectural marvels unlike any the world has seen
