The place can have immense tourism potential but what spoils it are as follows:

1. Once you reach there touts start following your car on bike, asking you to park and come for boat ride

2. As you walk in after parking it's dirty everywhere. In one section you will see people getting oil massage in open and jumping into the water to wash it off with soap.

3. As you start walking towards coracle (basket shaped boat) boarding point they are selling fish on both sides, fried as well as otherwise creating an eye sore as well as smelling disaster. The last few steps towards coracle is no steps at all, it's rocky slippery slope, so young children and elderly people need to be very cautious.

4. Just before you board the coracle the boatman will tell you about a mandatory Rs.250/- tip as if it's their entitlement thereby further spoiling the mood. On route he will keep pressuring you to go to other end to ask more money.

Overall I would recommend families to stay away from this dirty and unorganised place.

Drove from Bangalore to Hognekkal falls over a holiday recently in Jan. The drive is pleasant in both the routes i.e. the one via Anchetty or via Dharampuri. The spot per se is appealing. What is good is that there is enough parking, and a decent hotel for having lunch, the spot is 10mins walkable distance to the parking.

However, the place is poorly managed and absolutely no regulation of what is going on here. The pathway to entry to falls has been filled with massage guys ruling most of the real estate of the area. The inside pathway is with potholes, broken roads and filled with chlorine sprays! Next, the lanes leading to the boating area are filled with fish shops in the market as if people have come there to buy raw fish!!. Not to mention, there are street-side hotels selling fish fry all over the streets and lanes.

With great expectations and hope we started from bangalore to hogenakkal; it took 3.5 hours to reach the spot.
Now there's only tamilnadu entrance toward hogenakkal., the Karnataka side entry is being blocked.
Reached the check post by 12pm , taken the ticket for rs 70.
Took another 30 minutes to reach the hogenakkal falls area.
Taken rs 30 parking fees and parked our car ; lots of agents were approaching us for the Boat ride and offering stay nearby.
But we dint opt for any guide or agents.
Walking towards the main falls we were not able to see the proper falls as the whole area has been converted to bathing spot,
Unhygienic and all crowded with people waiting to get dipped for bath after the oil massage even though it was a week day not a weekend it was too crowded.
The hanging bridge was closed and guarded.separate spots for female and Male bathing spots but not hygeinic at all.
The park next to the bathing spot was not well maintained..
It was too hot at the time of the day.
The crocodile rehabilitation centre was the last spot remaining, which was given entry with a 10rs ticket. Few crocodiles were there.
All the spots connecting to the river banks were filled with people bathing and washing their clothes and the river was littered with clothes and garbage.
After around 2.5 hours, we finally left from hogenakkal back to bangalore.

This was my second visit to the waterfalls and it was totally disappointing due to the following reasons
1.All the waterfall pics and boat rides you in youtube and other forums are from the karnataka side of the fall and that boating point is closed now and they take you from Tamil Nadu side where they charge you 750rs for 3 people(will be more if you are more than 3) including the boatman .The boatman will drive the boat only for 30 mins hardly and show u just one small fall which can be even seen from the pull and if you want to visit the main falls or island or the place where shooting of movies have been done they will ask more to the tune of 1500rs and during the entire boat ride he will keep on saying only this take bigger ride will show everything and all .
2 I went with my parents who are senior citizen and the tamil nadu side of boarding has no standing area forget seating area boatman are fighting to get the life jackets and then they give it to you and your ride start there is no system at all.
2.We started around 7 30 AM from bangalore and reached around 11 30 and no parking at all we had to park in front of a Aquarium and walk back all the way.

Horrible !!!!! Please Stay Away

I love travelling ,Hogenakkal falls was on my to do list as it’s compared to the Niagara of India. The reality is that, you might as well as stay home and watch Niagara on YouTube. The whole experience is horrible. You are promised a official boat ride to take you to all the places. Once you get in you are hassled for extra money to take you to the place that looks like what you see in pictures. Normally being asked for extra money is pretty common in India. However here the boat guys are really rude and you have to pay more than double of your initial price for an illegal trip to see a place that u plan to see in the first place. The boat people are a nightmare, the place is dirty and there is nothing to see if u don’t want to give in to the jackass boat guys demands. Even if u choose not to pay extra and do the ride you are hassled for more money when u get down. It has to be the worst place I’ve been to in India. Thanks to the greedy boat people for killing tourism in this place.

One should check whether the cine or main falls open or not. If main falls are not open then it's no use to visit this place. Usually during rainy seasons due to huge water flow the main falls will close so they will take you on boat in other side where the view and ambience is not good. My suggestion is avoid during this season's. Yesterday I visited the place, main falls are not open. We paid 750/- govt charges for boat trip for an hour but it's not given excitement due to not allowing to main falls. If you prefer to go by car from bangalore then prefer Bangalore to Dharmapuri highway road only and other road Google show but not good to go with family, it's really insecure. Use all government services for safety point of view or else people miss guide you by offering to show different places and don't fall on their words.

The falls is scenic but for the place which has been very badly maintained and dirty.
The place is tagged a plastic free zone by the Tamilnadu government, but you will find too many roadside stalls selling items which has plastic and which people throw away mindlessly everywhere. There are no dustbins provided either. Then there are clothes and other items clinging on to the trees or by the riverside making the place very untidy. Alas, to make things worse, there is the oil bath service which honestly, I don't know how government can legally allow to run. People (men & women) take the oil massage on the rocks in front of everyone and then take a bath in the water with soap and other stuff making the place slippery and water very dirty. There are plenty of people to fleece you if you opt for a coracle ride and the soliciting by local people for boat ride starts right from the checkpost where parking fees are collected. Like it or not, there will be one person behind you right from the time you park the car asking to take a coracle ride. Government rate of Rs. 750 per coracle (max 4 people per coracle) is just symbolic and the person who will be assigned for the ride will ask for more, be it as tips or for covering falls from Karnataka side.
There are no good restaurants available considering that the place is visited by thousands of tourists daily. Only thing found plenty is people selling fried river fish by the roadside.

Overall, not a very pleasant experience.

Its a wonderful place, smoke coming out of rock, the place lives upto its name. We went after a downpour and there was full of water in the falls. Had a wonderful 'parisal' ride.

If you are planning to go, read this carefully.

Don't call the numbers of guides based on online reviews -a sureshot way to loose more money. The guides are very nice people, but they know that online people can afford to pay more.

Take the boat ticket at counter and stick to the places that is prescribed at the official counter.

There will tempt you to go to 'extra' places, but it means more money, much more money!

The fish cooking stuff is popular here. Yet I suggest the packed food or food in hotel Tamilnadu, which is very closely and much cheaper and hygienic. The cooked food eating place stincks.

Be careful while walking on water for slippery and sharp rocks.

Officially, Hogenekkal boating is closed for renovation purposes. It will take another 45 days to re-open.

We contacted Mr.Mani(9159447770), the contact we got from Trip Advisor. Our visit was on Sunday(5th May),and Saturday we discussed with Mr.Mani about our trip to Hogenekkal. He promised that he will ensure the arrangments and food. We specifically mentioned about Safety Jackets.,

When we reached there, he arranged some other person to take us to boating; we found that there is no safety jackets if we go boating, and the boating is arranged privately by the boat owners with out any safety precautions and safety & legal rules are flouted. Upon asking Mr. Mani, about the safety jackets on Sunday Morning after we reached there (bcos none in our family knew swimming - this i told him on Saturday itself);
he said "nothing will happen sir, you can come, lots of ladies and kids are already boating, which you can see". When I insisted, he just disconnected the call.

And food also, for 4 people, he asked us to give 1000 rupees + chicken we have to buy and give it to him. (Chkn fry, chkn gravy and white rice). Later understood, in the local restaurants we get freshly caught fish curry, fry and rice for 150 to 200 rupees based on size of the fish. I felt for 4 ppl 1000 rupees was high, that too, we will supply chicken. Luckily, I ddnt opt for it.

Plz be careful when you visit, about the safety , if at all you want to ensure your family's safety . Dont go such private parties, as they do not take any responsibility, and hand in glove with the local adminstration bodies.

Our sunday was totally spoiled. I am very upset with the way Mr.Mani manipulated things. Request not to contact him,if you really care about safety
