The Departmental Courbet museum presents the life and work of Gustave Courbet, realistic painter from Ornans, through a rich permanent exhibition of over 70 works. The permanent collection evokes Ornans to Paris, his life, the aesthetic revolution he led, artistic circles he frequented, and political and social commitments. The museum organizes two temporary exhibitions each year and offers many activities: concerts, storytelling, shows, conferences, etc., detailed in our "cultural programming" quarterly.

We drove to Ornans to see this museum and we were not disappointed. Located in the scenic small town the museum has many of Courbet's famous paintings including the infamous one. It may not be so shocking these days but it was pretty scandalous in...More

What we loved is the museum building that was renovated 2011. A masterpiece combination of old and modern and maximizing of the location right by and on the water of the Loue river.

We loved this 'museum' which is really a gallery dedicated to Courbet. Not the greatest artist who ever lived but his importance to French art should not be underestimated - renowned for painting large scenes of ordinary country people before it was the thing to...More

a very very nice museum in terms of paintings but even the building itself. The permanent collection is very interesting and the actual temporary show too. A real pity that one of the best painting of Coubert is not here but in Oslo, "le fou...More

The Courbet museum is a small museum (will take you approx 1 hour for a full tour) but really worth the journey. The museum is in the family house of the painter. Lots of painting, showing the evolution of Courbet style, linked to his personnal...More

A good collection of Courbet's work from his earliest paintings to his death. I don't know his work well, so I can't say how representative the collection is, but what's here is pleasing & nicely presented. The temporary exhibition of "erotic" art has some amazing...More

The Musee Courbet focuses on the works of Courbet with some other related special exhibits. The exhibit that was up during our visit concerned works of art that related to Courbet's L'Origine du Monde. Very different from other exhibits I've seen and probably not a...More

An intimate museum featuring works of Courbet, mainly portraits, landscapes and early works. None of his most controversial pieces are here or his large canvasses. But the museum does a good job explaining the progression of his work, the role politics played in his life,...More
