This attraction is fine, nothing major and distroyed by the hotel that is derelict in the background. you see it every where you are at this beach. it should really be knocked down. beware of the tide time you can get caught out very quickly walking around the wreck.

I've been to Bunbeg many many times. I regard the beach area as my spiritual home. I proposed in the hotel. My first grandchild played on the beach.
Two of my little Schnauzer dogs ashes
We're scattered on the little island on the beach. A truly wonderful place and I hope
My days of visiting Bunbeg will continue for years to come.

Eddie's Boat is an abandoned fishing boat on Maherclogher Beach in Bunbeg, and in Irish it translates "Bád Eddie" and not "Bad Eddie" as Tripadvisor advises us. There is nothing bad about Eddie's Boat!!!

It ran into trouble during stormy seas in the '70's, is still there to this day, and Gweedore Toursism are proud of their state of the art heritage facility that rivals the Titanic Exhibition in Belfast, without it's hoity-toity trappings. It has been a vanguard of Gweedore post-carding for 40 years.

The tide has to be out to get up close and personal but trust me, it's worth it. I went with a friend of mine, but will have to return with the wife, as I know she would appreciate it more than The Titanic. Do yourself a favour and visit.

The name of this boat wreck, a landmark on beautiful Magheraclogher Beach in Bunbeg has been lost in translation! Bád Eddie means Eddie's Boat in the Irish language. The title this attraction has been given on Tripadvisor has me wondering what Eddie did to deserve this reputation!

I have watched this old trawler gradually disappear over the last 30years.
No visit to Bunbeg was complete without a visit to the boat.

For information it is called the 'Cara na Mara' (Friend of the Sea) not 'Bad Eddie' Bad is Gaelic for boat hence literally Eddie's boat.
It is still worth a walk out on the sand to see what is still there.

We had been at a wedding nearby and guests were speaking about the shipwreck on a beach, where the bridal party had photos taken. We thought it was worth a visit. It was a lovely day and easy to find. It's just lying on the beach rotting away but perfect for a fabulous photo opportunity. Definitely worth a visit if in the area.

If, by chance, you are staying at the An Chuirt, there's a thing for you to find. On the opposite side of the road - the river side - and just past the hotel, there's an old hand painted billboard now almost completely covered with overgrowth. It was made to promote the local tourist trade, pointing out camp sites, local hotels and features, and the predominant feature illustrated was Maheraclogher beach. And there is the wreck, very different from the way you see it today.

It shone white in the sun, complete - the decks and wheelhouse still in place, with families admiring it, children chasing around it... The bilboard, judging by its style, was probably put in place in the late seventies.

There's only one road to Maheraclogher beach, ending in a downwards sloping glide that reveals the beach in panoramic fashion. From the crest of that hill on down, the wreck is a small but still focal point of attention, the only feature across a harbor of sand.

The beach is almost completely surrounded by land, a bowl with a minor crack to the west where the tide pours in. Therein leans the boat, corroding before your eyes. No longer the gleaming white of the seventies - no longer even the weathered wreck of the early millenium. An image search will show you the dissolution even within the past few years.

"Friend of the Sea" is dying. Quickly. What has become an iconic image of the area has been left to naturally erode - as it should be - and will be gone within a decade. You should be there, to run your hands across the rough wood, to peek into the rusted gears and cogs of her corpse, to take, for the millionth time, that iconic picture one more time for yourself before she collapses to timber.

In a place where the land seems immortal, Eddie's boat is not. Experience that view while you can.

Like a child again, as I cast off my shoes and rolled up my jeans and walked on the sand out to the waters edge, whilst the dogs ran back and forward and happily splooshed my wife and I with their big dollops of water that they caste up off the surface of the sea

How something as simple as a wreck of an old trawler on a Sandy shore with an enchanting view that changes every direction that you look, can bring such peace and contentment

We used our GPS and could never find this wreck. Drove several hours just to see it so we were disappointed in not finding it. Not sure it is even there any longer.
