It's really a little nice place! I went there with my boyfriend and I have to admint that it's a very romantic place, very charateristic , tipical Abruzzo's mountain town, there are very good restaurants too.

I visited Pacentro last week during a stay in the Abruzzo region of Italy. Despite the Madonna connection, this village has retained the tradtional Italian village community feel. Some of the buildings in the historic centre are over 600 years old, with several churches and a castle all within walking distance of each other.
We were lucky enough to visit Pacentro on the festival day of their patron saint. The younger residents all seem to have a grasp of English and explained that a church service would be followed by a procession through the village. During the service, we waited in the square and watched the locals passing the time. It was a privilege to view the start of the procession when young and old started singing and following a statue of the Virgin Mary (all done in typical Italian fashion of there being 10 minutes of chaos before everything just happened!).
There is a lot of history in and around the village (visit the main square for a useful map with all points of interested - including descriptions in English).

I first came to Pacentro in 2010 one year after the earthquake that devastated L'Aquila. I was staying in Sulmona for a month. It was my base for exploring Abruzzo. While there my landlord became my guide to all things in the area. One day he said I think we will visit a very special place today where we will have the best coffee. Coffee made from water that comes from the Majella. The visit to Pacentro was very special. Of all the places I had experienced over the 15 years of traveling in Italy this place made me feel like I belonged there. There are thousands of pictures of Pacentro on line so I won't even try to describe it. You just have to see it. But if it was just about how it looks then it would be a contest impossible to settle between all the beautiful places in Italy. It is more. It is the welcoming, open people, the location in the amazing national park, and the incredible culinary tradition of the area and Abruzzo generally.
I now spend about 5 months a year there in the house that I have restored in the "old" part of town. Everyone should experience Pacentro and Abruzzo the undiscovered part of Italy.

Pacentro is a small, old stone age town. It was the most amazing place I've been to - ever. The people are so nice, the food is incredible, and the prices are even better. If you want to get a true feeling of Italy, this is the town to go to.

Wander along medieval streets, admire the castle and all the historical buildings, taste the local cuisiine. Ranked one of the most beautiful towns in Italy (i borghi piu' belli d'Italia), and it totally deserves it!

Pacentro is a beautiful small village in the middle of the abruzzos. When you walk through the small and labyrinthine streets, you´ll meet the nonnas sitting in front of their houses which are decorated with lovely flowerpots. The house we lived in named “casa carolina” is located close by the center of pacentro. The accurately restored typical Italian house fascinated our whole family. The bathroom is flooded with light caused by the floor-to-ceiling windows and the orange room was the most exceptional our daughters have slept in so far.
The lively atmosphere, very nice and talkative people (it doesn´t matter if you don´t speak Italian=) ) the awesome restaurants with fantastic pizze and calzone, the specialty of this region called arrosticini or the bakery with its fabulous bred and the absolute silence during the night (sometimes you can hear the wolves which live in the area around) made our time unforgettable. The most impressive event was the corso di zingari but we had also fun because of concerts which took place in the evening.
We did some great hiking tours close to the lago di scanno. After a 6hours walk the cold water was the best refreshment you can imagine.
We´ll come back for sure!

We spent a lovely day walking the streets of this lovely little town, and toured the castle for 2 Euro. From the top of the castle you can see the entire Peligna valley, and marvel at the magnificent defensive planning of the people who built it. The church is magnificent, and the spring where the women used to wash their clothes is still pouring out from the mountain. There is plenty to see, and you can stop for an excellent cup of Illy cappuccino and a corner to in the main pizza. The town is interestingly built with arched tunnels leading to some of the streets.
