Djerdap National Park (Iron Gates National Park) is located in the Danube Region as a border between Serbia and Romania. We visited the Serbia river bank and it was really wonderful! on road you can see fantastic views of the Danube River and the Romanian zone: we stopped each 5 minutes to take photos. Also, in the Serbian zone, you can see some sightseeing points like Trajan's Bridge, Diana Roman Fort Djerdap Dam or Golubac Fortress in the surroundings of the park. Also, we did a hikking in the park after obtain an authorization in the turist information in Donji Milanovac. The hikking was great and the views and lookout really charming! (we went to Veliki Strbac). One of the best natural places in Serbia. Top in our trip around all country!

The Djerdap National Park in Serbia offers much to see with the ideal route from Belgrade being Pozarevac – Golubac – Donji Milanovac – Drobeta Turnu Severin (Romania).
The Djerdap National Park comprises 64,000 hectares and basically commences from Golubac which is situated on a wide section of the Danube, with Golubac Fortress built in the 14th century being the key attraction. From Golubac, one enters the stunning Djedrap National Park which encompasses the beauty of the Iron Gate / Djerdap Gorge through which the Danube flows.
The Danube “Iron Gate” Gorge is 96 klms long and comprises four beautiful gorges and two canyons (through which the Danube flows) with spectacular views from cliffs which are up to 300 hundred metres in height. Besides the lovely gorges, there are numerous pre-historical and Roman sights that can also be visited, with the Park also having a multitude of flora and fauna. It should be noted that whilst the road is windy, quite narrow and encompasses many tunnels, driving is not overly difficult.
The journey finishes at the Serbian / Romanian Border where one crosses into Romania (near town of Drobeta Turnu Severin) via the roadway over the Djerdap Dam.
In conclusion, the Djerdap National Park is absolutely stunning and have no hesitation in thoroughly recommending the above route and at the same time would suggest possibly incorporating Silver Lake (otherwise known as Srebrno Jezero) which is approximately 25klms north of Golubac and is well worth a visit / overnight stay, time permitting).
Accomodation is extremely cheap with the best option probably being to book an apartment for the night(s), as hotels are not that prevalent and quality can be questionable based upon our experiences during our visit to the area.

Walked the Veliki Strbac trail with park rangers - a trail leading up to wonderful views of the Iron gates, the Djerdap park and Romania Portile de Fier park opposite. Amazing populations of butterflies, wonderful forest and well marked trail.
Whilst there make sure to also visit the Mesolithic 9000 year old site at Lepenski Vir near Donji Milanovac http://www.lepenski-vir.org/

Go! Go! Go! No matter where you are, this place must be seen! Djerdap is the biggest national park in Serbia so it's much easier to cover the entire area by car, but it's totally worth to visit only some places to see the amazing views over Danube and have a peek to Romania. We travelled from Golubac to Donji Milanovac by hitch-hiking or walking. Unfortunately, Golubac fortress is currently under reconstruction so we couldn't explore the place, but views are still breathtaking along the road. We also stopped in Lepenski Vir. There's an open -air museum, archeological museum of high importance and very nice and cheap local restaurant. Donji Milanovac can easily be a town in lake region of Italy. Hills around, boats in the water, busy promanade. The place is very relaxing, with very good tourism infrastructure, beach, cafes and there's also visitor center for Djerdap NP. Staff speaks English very well, they provide you with all information you're asking for and it's open until 9pm from Wednesday till Sunday!!

We went there with our tour guide to see the Iron Gates. With a private car, we were able to visit prehistoric Lepenski Vir located by the Danube river and the new magnificent glass building housing the Mesolithic 9,000-10,000 yr old artifacts and remains. Had a delicious local ethnic lunch nearby afterwards. Also visited Viminacium, an old major Roman military town with a recently completed, reconstructed Roman village and works of art. Unfortunately, most of artifacts are on an exhibition tour in Santiago, Chile. A few meters away, is a museum that housed 4 mammoths (800,000 yrs old), one of which is a complete skeleton. This is still an on going archeological excavation. The drive to the Iron Gates is magnificent! Very scenic with the Carpathian and the Balkan mountains and with the Danube river that divides Romania and Serbia. We had a 90 minute boat ride in the river which provided specular views of both countries by the Danube. The boat was prearranged trip by our tour guide. So, mention this to your guide, if you'll hire one, in case you're interested in this on the Serbian side. The Romanian side has lots of boats for tours but the Serbian part hardly has any for tourists. SIMPLY SPECTACULAR & MAGNIFICENT VIEWS! One of the best in the world!

I hired a car with some friends and went on an (ambitious) day trip to Djerdap from Belgrade. It was totally worth the journey, most of which was driving right beside the Danube, through the Golubac fortress and on to the Iron Gates, stopping at the Neolithic settlement Lepenski Vir on the way. The scenery is absolutely spectacular: I'd really recommend hiring a car and driving along that road. It's definitely worth spending more than a day there - we didn't want to leave, and kept passing lovely looking guest houses with views out onto the Danube (which actually was blue). It would also be great to go hiking above the Iron Gates to get the most of the view. Definitely going to go back next summer and spend more time there.

We sailed through the Iron Gates Gorge during our cruise trip from Cetate of Romania to Serbia and this trip was considered to be fruitful, in particular, passing by the Carpathian Mountains.
There were much to be seen, from the Djerdap I water locks, Golubac Fortress, Decebalus monument, Mraconia Monastry to Trajan's stone inscriptions. There should be different experience from the land excursions and the water boat cruising and both are highly recommended to tourists while traveling to Romania/Serbia.

Hello to some friends and I would like to visit this park in the month of March. Read that it is mandatory to notify the visit because it is a nature reserve, is that true? If I had to choose a small path to do, which would be the most recommended? Should we buy a ticket?
Thank you so much!
