The drive along this road is simply stunning. The seemingly never ending snaking road alongside this magnificent lake with the reflection of the hill range and clouds in the water is a photographer’s dream, alongside many other places in this beautiful country.

I have to admit… I am deeply disappointed… I was very keen to see the devil on a staircase but there was no devil and also no staircase… not even a ladder. Therefore I have to say that this thing does not deliver what it promises from a title point of view!
Jokes aside - it is a solid view point but nothing more. It would be great if there would have been a sign explaining what the devils staircase is. We assume that it is the road close to the water. If you are anyways driving through give it a go and do a short stop. But it is not on your „plan“ dont extra drive there it is not worth it.

The Devils Staircase lookout is not 2911 Kingston Rd which is a private address. The Devils Staircase is the ridge which extends from the lake north of the Staircase Creek.

Great stop, with nice views on a clear day. Worth a 2min stop from Te Anau to Queenstown (or other way). There are 2x points to look after?

This is well worth stopping at as the view along the lake is magnificent. There’s no walking to do so you can quickly take your photos and jump back in the car.

Amazing views. Devil's Staircase (road winding up and round lake). Part of the country not to be missed. Many lovely spots to stop and picnic or swim.

Where the devil is the Devils staircase. Nice views but... not really. Not worth a drive from Queenstown just to go there.

Stunning views and scenery.....just like the whole region around here but we couldn't work out where the devil was or the staircase for that matter!!!! There was no sign or explanation that we could see.

Blue pristine lake at foreground and snow-capped mountain at horizon background, what a nice combination. You can find this winding road, with rocky wall at one side and Lake Wakatipu at the other side after Kingston some 40km from Queenstown on the way to Te Anau or from Te Anau. There is one famous look out site with some 15 car park. Really scenic and fantastic views, when the sky is clear blue and the snow-capped mountain clearly visible from this look out. However visitors go to this place not particularly or specially just for this destination, but usually part of their journeys to Te Anau and Milford Sound or Doubtful Sound.

No you don't however the lookout is on the main road between Kingston and Queenstown. We stopped for 5 minutes to look at the views, well worth it.
