Went with great expectations. Tea estates around you are pleasant. But rarely you get a shop for tea also - forget about eateries. At least the government must provide route map . Please please someone post a detailed picture of meghamalai. I found nothing there - like a haunted area.
Yes, for boys alone for a days trip, its fine. They can do trekking etc.

Very beautiful place, it's off beat and hence one can avoid too many people out here. The air and the ambiance is a perfect weekend getaway from the hustle bustle of city life. It's a place for just to relax and enjoy the view of the clouds moving over the mountain and see different birds and flowers that are very rare to come by in daily life

We 15 members of group decided to visit Megamalai in 25&26th Dec'14. Started from Chennai by car and reached Cumbum on 24th night. We arranged local transport, cook, utensils and other stuffs through our friend at Cumbum, started to Megamalai by a hired van. Chinnamanur to Megamalai is 37 KM, took 2.5hrs to reach, road condition is very very bad, only SUV, van can travel in this road. There are few bus service from Chinnamanur to Megamalai. We booked the accommodation at Travelers Bunglow belong to Highwavy punchayat, very simple room (750/- per night), blankets & bed sheet would not be clean. There is small tea shop near to the TB, provides food on request with little premium, don't expect good taste and hygiene. No other option for food. Since we know all this info earlier, we made self cooking arrangements and had feast like food throughout our stay.
There are few private tea estate's guest houses available, tariff would be high.
There is no crowd, can not see any outsiders. Ultimate location for nature and wild lovers, Climate was nice, temp around 20 degree in day and very chill in night, with mist passing around. Environment is not damaged much due to hard access, let continue the same bad road condition. Walking around tea estate and forest area is thrilling experience. Be careful on wild animals, we seen animal waste many places, heard from locals that elephants and leopards roaming frequently.
There are few sight seeing locations, Highwavy dam, vattaparai...etc. Few of our friends visited Vattaparai with the help of a local person by his Mahindra Thar jeep, they had seen few animals and good scenery. Visiting one location to other one is highly challenging, took minimum 1.5 hrs to travel 10 KM.
We spent time in trekking, swimming in the lake, fishing by tackle (made with bamboo stick and other fishing eqpt which we brought)
No mobile signal, except Bsnl Cellone.
This location is fit for max two days stay, bumpy travel and not particular about food / self arrangements. This TB accommodation may not be preferred for couple / family due to unhygienic room and lack of food outlets.

Once you reach Chinnamannur, you can never site a decent road until you return back ! Started the uphill journey and all we could see was one bike following us and none on either way ! In fact, we felt tired and sort of felt bad about the decision to make it to Megamalai. The sign board says 29 kms from Chinnamannur, but, certainly, it was much more. Starting around 11:30, after a ride of 90 minutes, we felt moisture filled air and suddenly, the climate and scenary changed. Once we crossed the Megamalai village, the REAL Megamalai started.
WOW !!!!!!!!! What a SCENIC PLACE .... VIRGIN MOUNTAINS !!!!!! UNTOCUHED BY COMMERICALs !!
We soon reached HIGHWAVYS DAM around 3:30 PM. We had booked us a cottage (IB) at the Highwavys dam. The view from the cottage was one of the spectacular views. 30 mins ride from the Highwavys Dam, we reached THOOVANAM dam. The dam was a class place and the other side was the end of a hill - the water falls provided water to Suruli. The cold wind and the clouds, made us realize we were really in MEGAMALAI.
Next morning, having booked breakfast in the mess, we started the day trip at 8 AM; towards the final tip of Megamalai - Eravangalar DAM. We were directed to go through the banks of the river, as there was not water, which was much better then the roads and a shortcut. What a scenic drive ! Saw Manalar dam on the way. After a 90 mins drive, we reached Eravangalar Dam. YES ! We saw Heaven for some minutes ! Mild sunshine for 2 mins, sudden heavy rain for few mins, slight drizzle for few mins, heavy clouds for few mins, slight clouds and mild drizzle for few mins, and sunshine is back ! AWESOME !!! FREAKING AWESOME !!
We spent almost an hour there and started our journey back. We heard about Vattaparai and started our jeep drive towards ! We drive for 30 mins and felt we were very tired and sort of missed the route as well. We decided to return back and dont know what we missed there....

Our family, a group of seven , aged between 14 years and 68 years , wanted a deviation from regular hot spots visit and decided to do a trip to Megamalai from coimbatore.
We went by our own car upto theni, the route being coimbatore - palladam - tharapuram - odanchatram - vathalagundu - periakulam - theni. ( totalling 240 kms done in 4 hours 30 mins with a good luch at vathala kundu @ thalapakattu restaurant. costs approx. per pax Rs. 300/-.
At theni, we hired a tata sumo for 3 days from spk travels phone 9688538916 mr suresh who was very helpful and he summoned Mr. Pandi a drvier who is well versed with all tourist attractions in Megamalai. Travels are charging Rs 4,500/- for day one and therefter Rs. 1,500/- every day and you have to bear driver bata extra.
After about 2 1/2 hours gruelling journey we reached Highways Panchayat office , where accomadation was arranged. Panchayat charges Rs. 750 per room per day and rooms are simple. A double bed with dirty linen and pillows. Contact Mr Balamurugan for rooms on 9489249522. You have to pay money in advance for room reservation and no refund s allowed. Better plan on weekdays as week ends are always full. There is no hotel at Highways and only one mess run by Murugan , who cooks homely food. Food alas will never be great but eat what you get.
All tourist spots are barricaded with gates and have to get permission to visit. We visited thoovanam dam - a very Picturesque Spot and with narrow roads with no barricades on either side. Only an experienced driver can make up to this destination and no opposite vehicles are allowed. We could see lots of elephant dung enroute and is about 4 kms from panchayat office.
The next day we visited maharaja mettu - with virtually no road but only with boulders and craters. It took almost 2 hours to cover the 15 kms journey and we could go till the dam only. It was also locked and we have to get permission.
Early mornings are always welcome for long trek walks and is very enjoying. It was raining all afternoon till evening and nights were colder in winter.
It is worth a visit if you planned for 1 night and 2 days as we begin to feel boredom since we were there for three days. For hospital emergency, visit woodbriars garden hospital, just half a km from panchayat office.
There is no automobile workshop nor a puncture shop and you are at mercy for all needs.
Only BSNL mobile works there and internet connection is very poor say about 256 kb.

Meghamalai is a nuclear family in its population & outreach. Many people don't know about this treasure & people there are not too exposing it as a tourist spot. Meghamalai mainly concentrates on TEA Cultivation & that's the main source of income for the people. You need to know people there to access some of the places. Me & my friends planned to visit meghamalai for 2013 New year & we had a fun time. You need to arrange your travel to the top of the hills from Theni. Roads are very very very bad. We took a TATA SUMO driven by Manikam (Manic). He is a wonderful fellow. (Mancikam - 08760321016)
Positives - Night safari (Again need to know people there), Saw herds of bison at midnight with glowing eyes - One heck of an experience, Fresh - Grade 1 tea, Small inert ice chill water falls, Tea plantations, Ultimate Dam view
Negatives - No good accomodation, food is ok, No Good alcohol.

Meghamalai is a secluded place where the tourist influx is nill except on weekends that to only two or three vehicles. Preferably a suv is ideal as the road condition is very bad. Public transport is just one service a day. Highwavis is the place on the top hill, where you have small petty shop serves you food and the panchayat guest house accommodates visitors. With all hardship you reach the place, and you forget everything in the world and remains only serene tranquil mood. It is a heaven on earth. You may travel via Theni, Chinnamanur, Meghamalai foot hill. Travelers are not allowed to enter this reserved area between 6PM to 6AM. Words can not express the joy untill you visit the place.

it was a great place. the best word to describe it is heaven on earth. road is the only concern. just 25 kms ghat or hill road is a very tough challenge to the driver as well as the vehicle. only suvs can go. the vehicle gets damaged.
