We booked a tour through the tourist office in Massafra, open 9.30-12.30 Mon-Sat. We visited three cave churches that are locked otherwise and the detail of the art work was amazing. Some representations we had not seen before. The guide was very good and her English was good enough to explain what we were seeing. This tourist office is run... More

We heard that Massafra was really authentic and very special and arranged through the tourist office for a private tour (it turned out to be led by the woman who works in the tourist office herself). We walked to 3 amazing cave churches in the town that are not open to the public and the sites had to be opened... More

Massafra is a lovely little city and we walked around the old town quite a bit but we were not aware that behind little doorways were hiding incredible cave churches. Brilliant place to visit, so interesting.. Will visit more often. A place that's been there forever and is the dividing path between the new and old parts of the city. Many stories are told by the tourist attraction people about the history of the path and the holes in the walls where people used to live hundreds of years ago.

Had the good fortune to be given a tour of the church and surrounding area. Genuinely surprised by the hidden attractions in the ravine and grotto areas. Massafra is a city with a lot of civic pride and the volunteers do an excellent job in maintaining the place. Bring good walking shoes !
