We went as a family of 4 for one day. We stayed in Doradal the night before so we could enter the park on time. I can recommend to be at the gate early to allow paying for the car pass and tickets before 9AM. As foreigners we found we needed to have Columbian cash to pay all the time, our cards were hit and miss if they worked and this place did not take our cards. We selected the package that included the victoria falls as we planned to cool off after wandering around the park. Of course we were draw by the hippopotamus and thats what we went to see first. In the lake by the africa hotel and then a couple in smaller pens. We brought our binoculars and it was well worth it to see the hippos across the lake. We were able to buy carrots and the first hippo was not interested, but fortunately the second famous Vanessa was there right at the wall and ate our carrots. Vehicle is a must if you want to get around the park quickly and you can see many animals right from the car. We left early as recommended to not get into any traffic jam and it worked.

It seemed expensive to me for the services they provide, the bad pools, it's only for children, the dangerous attractions but more for maintenance than because they are risky. If I compare with Piscilago, I would rate Piscilago 9 and Parque Napoles 2. Bad, the attention, the prices, the traffic, the contamination to the animals, etc.

I went to Hacienda Napoles in July. It is very famous for the animals, there were many animals and water attractions. the service is good, I liked to see different animals, I would come back, because it is a special experience with nature.
I enjoyed a lot with my family and friends.

This hacienda belonged to Pablo Escobar. It describes itself as a "theme park", but it is much more than that. Escobar's house is in ruins, however the ruin is both a museum and a memorial. You walk through the house, reading descriptions and seeing pictures of the terror that was visited on Colombians during the 80s and early 90s due to the drug cartels, and the groups opposed to them. Outside is Escobar's helipad and airstrip. Some of his car collection rusts out the front. His bullring is currently being converted into an "African museum".
Colombia has the only group of wild hippopotamuses in the world outside Africa. Hippos kept on the hacienda by Escobar went native after his death, and now a group of 40 second and third generation hippos happily wallow in the lake beside one of the hotels.
Napoles also has many animals, which are in various states of fortune. The butterfly house, for example, is delightful, and they have built large grassland type enclosures for some of the African animals, however the South American natives (jaguars, ocelots, pumas) are in distressingly small cages, and this is the park's major downfall. All animals look really healthy however, and one of the highlights is interacting with Vanesa the very tame hippo, who has no qualms about coming up to the fence to sniff you. It would have been better if Vanesa was never tamed, but given this is her irrevocable history, she is highly enjoyable to observe.
Because this is private land, it is refreshingly free of trash (unlike most other areas of Colombia that the public have access to) and full of exotic wild birds that are easily observable flying between trees, especially in the late afternoon.
I was virtually the only person in the place. I was told that 3000 odd Colombians turn up on weekends, which would be hellish, therefore, go during the week - thursday was heaven!
The on-site hotels are expensive, but it is possible to camp, and I think this would be highly worthwhile for the pretty location and ability to bird watch from the camp site in the evening and early morning (although the area is prone to violent electrical storms and torrential rain!)
To get to Hacienda Napoles is dead easy - the town of Doradal is on the highway between Bogota and Medellin. The bus stop in Doradal has a big map of the area, a restaurant and cheap hotel with swimming pool attached, and there are other cheap hotels in Doradal along the highway.
From Doradal it's possible to get a tuk-tuk for 7000 pesos, or you can walk, the entrance off the highway is less than 1km east of town. There is a long driveway to walk up from the highway entrance to the park gate, but this too is pretty with rolling farmland, horses and birds to look at.
I can't stand "theme parks" or large crowds. The hacienda turned out to be a peaceful, pristine piece of nature and a riveting and very one of a kind slice of narcotrafico history which I highly recommend for anyone interested in unusual history and who likes birds and animals.

Thank you very much for your review, hope see you soon again.
At the present we are working on better habitats for the felines that still lives on cages, on january 2013, two bengala tigers were moved to a new habitat with 20.000 sq mt, all the felines will have this area for each especie.
Thanks again from Parque Tematico Hacienda Napoles.

I had read about the existence of a villa once used by druglord Pablo Escobar and was eager to pay a visit, since we were in the neighborhood.
Upon our arrival I saw the plane mounted on the top of the entrance, but a bit further on we saw a giant concrete elephant and I began to doubt if we were in the right place.
We bought entrance tickets (optional swimming package) and entered a giant amusement park with an animal/dinosaur theme going on. The place is huge so you are driven around in an open jeep.
I was mainly interested in the villa, so we grabbed one of the bikes that were provided and headed up to the villa, tucked away in a corner of the park.
At the entrance is a collection of corroding vehicules once used by Pablo and his men. The villa was also decaying and had been taken over by the elements. The top floor wasn't accessible because of the danger it might collapse.
In the rest of the villa the walls were hung with pictures and text about Escobar, what he had done and how they finally got him. The message was clear, they were not happy with Escobar and he was better off dead. I think this is also the reason that they leave the villa as it is, besides the costs they probably didn't want to run the risk of glorifying Escobar.
All in all an ineresting afternoon, seeing through the rubbish I did get an impression of what it might have been like in the glory days. The landing strip behind the villa, and the idea of the numerous narcotrafficking planes that took off from here completed the picture.
If you are in the neighborhood (we payed a visit to Rio Claro) do stop by this place! But I wouldn't go out of my way for it. If you have kids with you it might be more interesting, just drop them off in the pool ; )

I liked the place. Prepared the visit well in advance, still found you don't get to know what it takes for a nice visit. I will focus in providing general info.
TIPS:
+Bring your own car or taxi. Attractions are VERY far away one from the next. Transportation can be arranged in the park, can not comment how good or practical it is.
+Wear right clothing, hat and shoes, choice of long walks and very hot weather.
+There are several options for admission, with or without water parks.
+Arrive early, specially if you plan to use the water parks.
+There are lodging facilities within the park if you plan to stay, several restaurants as well.
EXPECTATIONS:
+You will see a good deal of wild life. Large cats, hippos, elephants, antelopes, birds
+ It is a sizable piece on land, nice landscape and rare large trees (Baobab like).
+ There at least two water parks, new attractions is Victoria Falls and it looks very good.
+ Escobar's bullfighting ring turned into African culture museum.
+ The Mansion is gone 100%, only two shelters with the burned cars is left.
+ Small photographic museum about Escobar life (probably the only reference in the whole park)

Beautiful sightseeing by bus from Medellin the Hacienda Napoles (24,000 pesos)
At the entrance you can either walk or take moto taxi to the main entrance. This is mainly a theme park/zoo, very little of Pablo Escobar is here.

Weirdest place I've ever been.
Found the Pablo Escabar museum incredibly interesting (and sad), while the African museum was just bizarre and verging on racist and who even knows what all the dinosaur statues were about!
Worth a visit, but expect to be slightly confused about what you're seeing!

This one of those place that I will go once and will never come back (unless they really add more attractions). I like the overall park idea, plus it is one of those places that marked Colombian history, so I had to visit it. However, I had more fun at the nearby Rio Claro reserve.
I would arrive as early as possible since it gets busy and the weather in the morning is great. The lunch took hours since the restaurants are extremely busy, plus we had to wait a long time for the credit card machine to work. It was really hot after 11am, so we were glad we entered the waterpark. The waterpark is actually good and very refreshing, but you pay for only two hours.
I would have given them three starts, but I had a bad experience with the hotels. Long story short: I was told they had availability, so I deposited the money they requested one hour later. Then I got an email telling me to call them. When I called the owner (or manager), he told me they were fixing the swimming pool (or whatever) and I could not stay there. It took them more than two months to refund my money, plus I had to pay for the transfer (and the "4 por mil" tax).

We went there on Saturday. At no time did we feel that the park was packed full. I guess that the entrance fee that's a bit pricy is the reason. We bought the full pass that included the water attractions (about 60.000 pesos). We went about the park in the car, stopping to take photos and enter the water parks. We had a very nice experience watching the animals and enjoying the pools. I guess one could wish a bit more from the water attractions that are somewhat limited (there's basically just the pool in the Octopus and only two slides in the Río Salvaje). But in overall, having arrived at 12 pm we didn't have enough time to visit all the sites. So if you are planning on buying the full pass, you should get to the park early.
