Krakow is best known for the Wawel dragon, and Krak, the legendary ruler of Krakow,. There are many legends about them... Maczuga Herkules ,is a tall (30 meters) limestone stack, also know as Devil's Rock. . Twardowski's Rock , Sokola Skała , Krak's Club ..Many legends also to explaining the stange form of the Maczuga Herkules ( Hercules' Club) . One variant, says during the reign of Prince Krak, his country was ravaged by a terrifying dragon , who devoured cows for dinner, and virgins in the morning. The prince was overwhelmed with anger so great that he grabbed a huge club and hit it on the dragon's head, killing him on the spot. Then Krak placed his club at the mouth of the Ojców Valley as a warning to anyone who would like to go to Krakow with bad intentions... .
Behind Saint Mary's Basilica in Krakow is the National Archives building (Archiwum Narodowe) on the Sienna street. Located in the courtyard, you can see a sculpture of the ‘King Krak fighting the Dragon’, with a club. Hidden sculpture but quite well known to the inhabitants, .. : There is free parking in front of Maczuga Herkulesa rock ..

this rock is surely a beautiful monument of the nature... but if you are staying in front of it this feeling disappears like a fog... I really don't know why I felt disappointed... nevertheless, go and see...

Nice short hike from Castle or from parking spot but if you don't need a photo from short distance, it's not necessary to go. Parking is about 10 polish zloty.

Combine it with the small Pieskowa Skała castle just by as well as at least the essentials of the Ojców National Park few kilometers further down the road to get a rewarding full-day experience. The views towards the castle are now undisturbed. If you head towards the Mace from the castle-side, it is best to go down towards the road or even cross it - it looks best from there.

I loved Ojcowski National Park. Maczuga Herkulasa is just one of the many treasures of the area. Very impressive creation of nature, definitely worth a walk.

Located next to Zamek Pieskowa Skala is this amazing vertical rock formation. It is very easy to picture it as a club. It is easily seen driving by on the road. There is also a car park directly across from it and it is a nice walk although with some steep sections from here to the Zamek (castle)

An obligatory element of all primary school Geography books.
Therefore a must visit place on your route to Ojcowski Park.
I AM in agreement that it is not that impressive as expected...but still appealing and picturesque especially with the castle as a background. Enjoy!

A very nice place, spectacular, worth seeing, but not as much as it is told to be. Relatively small when observed close-by. The rest of rocks (The Piano, Chpic, etc) is a mistake.

There has been a lot of changes around since my first adult encounter with Maczuga - lots of trees has been cut down, horisons extended, view towards Pieskowa Skała castle is now undisturbed, paths and colour coded trails using them went through a revolution. But the Maczuga (Hercules's mace) is still the same, stil causing sighs to all tourists seing it for the first time, especially from the distance. Large car park (czarge) right at the foot of the Rock, dengerous crossing on the other side of the road.

Shocking to find such a monadnock right next to the Pieskowa Skała Castle. It's magnificent and definitely worth seeing!
