A hidden gem of Turkey well worth a visit. I think a car is a must as about 10km from the city of Nigde. Do a bit of research before you visit to help understanding of what you are seeing. Wear flat shoes. Look closely to find the underground rooms as no signs. A climb up the metal steps to the second floor is worth it but be careful. A nice cold drink or hot drink can be had opposite. Took us about 2 hours to look around.

The rock-carved church from the Middle Ages and the Only Smiling Virgin Mary Fresco in the World, open and closed, are magnificent. It is a visit worth seeing. Tomb jars and semi-open and closed living spaces and the frescoes of the Prophet John the Baptist with the Apostles and the Baptism of Jesus Christ are worth seeing. Magnificent Laughing Virgin Mary Fresco legend. Accepting museum card
It consists of an area of 1500 meters, but the rock holes in which it spreads cover a larger area.

Gumusler Monastery was the first place we visited in Capadoccia. It is superb - with its stone caves, chambers and frescos. Wear flat shoes. Also, brush up your knowledge of the place - else you won't be able to know the significance of the various frescos in the monastery. The place wasn't very crowded when we visited, luckily.

Our trip was about Cappadocia. Too many things to see, too many places to go...so we rented a car, and instead of the beaten path, we visited nearby cities...

Our road took us to this hidden place.

It is located in the heart of the picturesque village of Gumusler, carved into a mountain.

You enter the place from a small entrance and reach a courtyard with an open roof. On the sides of the walls, there are signs that they used wooden beams to create two maybe three levels to this open area. Check my photo and you will grasp the idea.

Probably only smiling Virgin Mary is depicted here on the walls, which are leading to different levels by now-closed off tunnels.

If you get a chance to visit this place, you will not forget it.
And if you are like me, a Star Wars fan, you will climb to the top and imagine the house of Owen & Beru Lars, caretakers of young Luke Skywalker on Tattooine...

Most people spend only 1 day in Cappadocia..... too sad, because there is so much more to be discovered. If you have some time to spend, please don't miss this hidden jewel nearby the town of Nigde. Well preserved paintings in an unexpected place! One of the best places to get a good idea about monasteries in the Byzantine times

If you have a car, thats a great side trip, less than 10 k from nigde and fresos in much better state than most of those in ihlara valley and goreme.
Without a car however you will spend about 3 hours total in public transport and waiting time and all this for a 15 minutes visit. Do your math. 5 tl entrance price.

I had been wanting to stop on the way back from Cappadocia, but had never been able. This time I did and was very surprised. It not not large, but the murals are superb, better than some at the Open Air Museum. It only take about 20 minutes to see everything and they do take Muze Karts. The museum staff are very helpful and give lots of information.
