Unfortunately out of season has a benefit (no crowds) and a disadvantage (a lot of places are closed). So we were obliged to wander on our own. Some fabulous medieval architecture and sensational views of the surrounding countryside,

My wife and I visited Le Castellet during an excursion on a Viking Ocean Cruise this past November. It is a quaint medieval hill village that was enjoyable walking around the winding streets. It has some spectacular views from around the surrounding walls. It was a worthwhile visit for us.

This delightful Medieval village makes for a great half-day’s visit. There is ample parking close to the village and it’s just a short walk away. We discovered varied and delightful shops in the village and it’s enjoyable to walk around as it has such an authentic feel without the crowds. Besides great little shops, you’ll find plenty of great photo ops. Make your way to the top of the village and discover a portal with a commanding view that takes one’s breath away. One of the shops we feel is a must-visit is the Maison de Nougat (this product is expensive but the best you will ever taste – it lasts six months so splurge for sustained memories once you’ve returned home). There is also a spice shop offering an incredible selection of blends that will let season items in a very Provençale style. This spot offers an abundance of seasonings unlike we’ve seen in most major US cities. Some travelers might not like seeing shops in a small village but this is not a museum and the inhabitants must make a living.

Having visited le Castellet on and off over three decades, our most recent visit last week left us feeling disappointed.

Over time we had noticed that the village was becoming more and more touristy and beginning to lose its authentic charm, something it used to have in abundance.

Five years having passed since our last visit, it has changed again and in our opinion not for the better. It still has the views and the setting, but is now almost entirely given over to souvenir shops, cafes and restaurants. The charm it used to have is gone. It is like shopping in an outdoor market. I don't think we will ever return.

Suggest that instead of le Castellet, you consider visiting nearby medieval la Cadiere d'Azur which caters for both locals and tourists, and at least for now still has a more authentic feel to it.

Very pretty and interesting village to visit for anyone in the area. The streets wind into each other and the history of the buildings is fascinating. The views from the castle walls are also great. Definitely a location set up for tourists, but a good way to spend a couple of hours.

We stopped here as part of our cruise ship tour. Village is very small and walkable. Nice views of the valley and vineyards. Several shops and a few restaurants. We found a small restaurant and stopped for some local wine with a view. The larger restaurant told us it would be a minimum of 20 minutes to be seated for lunch. We heard from others on our tour that the restaurant staff was rude and would not serve them.

We visit Le castellet every year and have watched it improve over the last twenty years. Money spent on roads inside village etc has been great improvement. Shops can change year on year but it helps you search village. Need to be quite mobile as up and down inside. We love the place. Particularly getting yearly new products, pottery etc. We love coffee at Roy Dis in fountain sqare

We visited Le Castellet medieval village (and also a local winery) with our cruise ship’s tour. At the village we had a beautiful view of the surrounding valley. There are picturesque shops, buildings, and a church along the cobblestone streets.

Historic Medieval village. The village may be accessed by car. Once inside the village, it's all walking! The village has many shops and restaurants. The prices are on the high side. A great place to take photographs. Relaxing excursion.
