Stopped off at Kourouta beach on our way back to our cruise ship from Olympia. It was quite hot and while we were able to get a beach chair, there was no shade, and we had to wait till other people left before we were able to get cairs with an umbrella.
This beach is over rated compared to beaches in the Caribbean. While it is advertised as sandy with clear water, in fact it is gravel and small stones and the water is not that clean. We only spent about 2 hours there and that was more than enough.

So we didn't want to pay to go see Olympia when our ship docked in Katakolon and decided to just do a beach day since it was our ship's first port in Greece. Got the five of us in a cab right at the end of the pier for 100 EU round-trip, not bad for a 20-30 minute drive each way. By the way, the taxi stand is really well run, with a person there asking where you want to go. We didn't know, just said a beach, and she pulls out this booklet showing pictures of all the local beaches. We said we wanted no rocks, and did want umbrellas and nice sand, and she suggested Kourouta Beach, and got us a driver. The driver was very pleasant and spoke manageable English so we could converse, and before we knew it we were at the beach. Plenty of available lounge chairs, all with umbrella as long as you order food or drinks from the servers who are never far. I think we were the only ones from our ship there, which was fantastic. Lots of locals. The beach was beautiful, well-maintained, and well-serviced. Nice sand, very hot but not burn your feet off hot. The food and drinks were not high-priced and delicious. The restaurant was playing great music, but not too loudly. The water was wonderfully calm and clear, my young son was able to swim around easily and loved seeing all the little fish around. He kept diving trying to catch one. Our driver met us about 3 hours later at the agreed upon time and drove us back to the ship. Great stop in Katakolon for us!

I spent the afternoon at this beach. The day was lovely, sunny & hot. The water was clean, warm & calm. There are a few small pebbles to walk across when first entering the water but they are smooth & it soon changes to all sand. The water is very clear. Lots of lounges & plenty of shade. I very nice way to spend the day while visiting Olympia.

We arrived here on a guided tour. Olympia in the morning, beach in the afternoon. It’s a great stretch of beach with a street that sits behind with bars and restaurants on. Most let you use the sunbeds outside. By chance we ended up in a place that most of our tour did. A bar restaurant called Mple. We had a nice lunch. One of the better bottles of wine we tried in Greece and I left feeling that we’d found the best place. Really enjoyed it.

Spent a day here - lovely water (calm and warm)
Food and drinks are cheap and staff can take your order at the loungers. You don't have to pay for loungers if you buy something from the kantina (eg coffee)
not overly crowded and beautiful sunsets

Our cruisehip stopped there and sinc eit was a last day of a 14 days cruise, we just wanted to relax withou seeing anymore ruins.
We got off the ship, walk to the right and found the main taxi stand tent. You can't miss it, there is a line of taxs waiting for customer. There is main guy who seems to be the dispatcher who will ask you where you want to go and tell you how much is a round trip.
Taxi to Kourotas was 80 euros for a car that can fit 4 persons.
The drive is quick and not much traffic. The driver will not ask for payment and will return at the time you request.
When you arrive at Kourouta beach, the chairs and umbrellas are free as long as you order food and drinks from the restaurants/bars who have set up the chairs.
There are people who will help you choose your seats and waiters to take your order.
Food is quite cheap here: 5.50 euros for a dish of chicken nuggets and fries, 3 euros for a huge ham and cheese sandwich.
At the agreed time, our taxi was already there and we paid him once we arrived back at the port.
In summary, a very cheap way to go to Kourouta without having to pay the big shore excursion fees charged by the cruiseline.

Fantastic sea, free horizon, sunset and at least 15 km of untouched beach. The restaurants on the beach are not really worth mentioning, a part from Dexamenes Hotel.

We went to this beach after visiting Olympia on a cruise ship excursion and it was a nice, relaxing time. Beach chairs are free and you just need to order food (we got 2 plates of fries, 2 gyros and 2 drinks for 14 euros). Please see my YouTube channel for my full experience: Morgancita

A long beach with lots of sand. The water is calm in the mornings but wavy in the afternoon. While calm it seems clean but in the afternoon its dirty. Not very developed as a tourist place, still there are a few cafes, fastfoods and nightclubs for the youth. It is a nice place to visit, the locals call it the mykonos of peloponesus. Still there is no comparison. Visit it if it is on your way.

We stopped in Katakolon port on a cruise ship and had a full day in the region. I booked a private tour of the ancient Olympia and wanted to visit a beach after the tour. Our tour guide, travel insiders, suggested this beach because that's where the locals go. Wow! What a treat! The beach has a long strip of beautiful clean sand and water. The sun beds are free, all you have to do is buy a drink or food from the gorgeous lounges who keep up the beach. The prices were more than reasonable. We were five people and ordered a full lunch and it all came out to around 30 euro. Oh and how did we know only the locals go here? There were no English menus, the very friendly waitress helped us order. If you are in the region I highly recommend this beach.

Hi, we will be visiting Katakolon for the day on our cruise in August, how far is this beach from the port? is it walking distance or a rough idea on the price of a taxi? TIA
Written 21 June 2017
It's over 25 km away. You should rent a car to come in Kourouta orelse the taxi costs around 80 euros.

Hola, me gustaría saber como puedo hacer para poder ir a visitar a la antigua Olympia y luego ir a la playa Kourouta en el mismo día saliendo del crucero a las 10 hs.
Muchas Gracias por la información
Saludos
