Taptapani(meaning tapta-pani or boiling water) is a hot spring and temple complex situated in the eastern ghats on the highway from Berhampur to Chandragiri. It is quite crowded with devotees and tourists most of the time. There is a deer park nearby as well. As it is situated on the road to jirang and khasada waterfall, hence can be included in a weekend trip or a tour.

Last month I happened to visit Odisha, to do a disaster survey for an International Project. Since I was the project leader, I invited some local friends from Odisha to help me with the survey. We started as early as 2 am from bubaneshwar to Ganjam District, Chattrapur, Brahmpur, Gopalpur, Chikiti, Ichapuram, ... after a whole days survey all of us were very tired.
One friend suggested Taptapani... omg..it was a surprise for me.
The journey on the rolling green hills, jungles washed by rains and clouds tucked within the distant hills – there is Taptapani located amidst the forests of Ganjam District of Orissa. Taptapani is mainly known for its natural hot sulphur springs whose water is considered to have medicinal properties.
I had a nice warm leg spa, and it was amazing... We were fresh as we were in the morning. The guys did go for a skinny dip on the other side. Since I didnt have clothes to change I could only do a leg spa

A hot water sping wihich is dirty, a temple as is the norm with these kind of placces in India, a deer park hosting some barking deers, couple of Sambars and plenty of spotted deers.

Filthy 10 feet square pool surrounded by plastic empty bottles, chips discarded bags, RUBBISH everywhere and an insult to whichever god the Mandir is dedicated to. And I have been coming to India for 43 years and not much that I haven’t seen. A Shame

We travelled from Gopalpur on sea to Taptapani expecting to face a sea of pilgrims at this Holy place and what a contrast ! Not a single tourist and only handful of locals paying their obeisance !
But please stay alert from smart monkeys. Temperature of hot spring water is comfortable after initial couple of minutes and then very soothing. The OTDC Tourist complex is a must visit attraction for it's unique positioning and architecture. You can listen to melodies of thousand birds as there are no other pollution. Food available at the Tourist complex is basic but freshly prepared for you only. Cottages are quite attractive.
But if you are not a die hard nature lover, the absence of other activities , are hindrances for night spending at Taptapani.

While I was doing research on places to visit in Odisha, during my 15 day tour of the state, one of the places I noticed was Taptapani, a little off the highway from Berhampur,Ganjam district. Since we were going to stay in Gopalpur on Sea for a couple of nights before proceeding to the more known Chilka Lake, I thought we could spend a night at Taptapani too, which it seemed, was a quiet hideaway in a hilly and forested part of the state, where we could also closely interact with the tribals and get to know their lifestyle.
I found that there was only one place where we could get accommodation--the Odisha Tourism guest house-- so as soon I had finalised my itinerary, I booked a room there.
After breakfast in Gopalpur, we started off for Taptapani which is about 75 kms away, passing the crowded town of Berhampur enroute. The road was undergoing repairs but most of it was full of potholes so it as slow going and we reached Taptapani only at lunch time.
The cafetaria attached to the guest house hustled up an adequate lunch after which we went out exploring a small "model"village adopted by the Odisha Government where tribals still maintain their original lifestyle. It was very interesting to see them at their various daily chores--pounding grains, cooking in the open, or just lounging round in the sun as it was still quite cool.
We were able to interact with quite a few of them and they made us welcome. It was an interesting interlude. While returning, we passed the much touted hot sulphur springs almost opposite where we were staying. However, the sight of naked bodies in the tepid water put us off a little and after a quick peek, we continued our walk through the forested paths, enjoying the serenity of the place.
The next morning,we had planned a trip to Chandragiri where the only Tibetan Buddhist monastery in this region, is located. From various tourist brochures, it appeared that this was second in size to the Buddhist monastery at Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh, so I was keen on a visit.
Early the next morning, after umpteen cups of tea and a hearty breakfast, we drove the 30 odd kms towards our next destination. It was not at all easy to find --there were no sign boards giving any directions and at every fork, we had to stop to ask the locals which way to proceed. Anyway, after about 2 hours, we managed to reach the monastery which we found at first glance a little disappointing as it was neither very large nor very well maintained. Quite a come down.
However, since we had taken the trouble to drive all this way, we decided to see it from inside and were quite astonished to see the lavish interiors, with beautiful colourful murals lining the corridors and the main hall. But...no photography inside, another disappointment!!
I am not one to be put down by such reverses so I scouted around and found another smaller monastery apparently used by nuns, which was open. We gingerly stepped inside, in fact one of the young monks standing by welcomed us and took us inside, and said we could take whatever pictures we wanted!!! So we wandered through its lavishly painted hall and had our fill of photographs. Thanking the youngster, who hailed from Sikkim in North Eastern India, we made a get away, also visiting the small but picturesque Khasada waterfall enroute.
We had planned to drive to Chilika lake via an interior route but lost our way (!!!) which was fortunate as were able to see some very remote and less visited parts of the state, mostly tribal settlements, where we got some interesting glimpses into tribal culture.
Some of the tribals we met on the way had tattooed faces and arms, a speciality of the Desia Kondh tribe, we were informed. One of the interesting activities we could observe was the cultivation and curing of turmeric which would be later pounded into powder for use as a condiment and also as medicine. These were some of the most unique experiences we had in our entire trip and which we cherish for a long time. A BIG BIG BONUS!!!

The sulphur springs are natural wonders and could be promoted well but are.not because the the facilities available are rudimentary. The enclosure for women is diapilated and locals wash using soap.and make it filthy
The local pandit can be persuaded to.empty the tank and let it refill but that only makes it.marginally better
