About
A conservation project by an ordinary couple attracts a lot of visitors inspired by their efforts to transform a barren hillslope into a forest. The Butterfly is used only as a catalyst . Breeding butterflies need endemic plants , clean air and humus rich soil . Caterpillars attract lot of insect predators hence the cycle is complete. Visitors get to see the free flying butterflies only between September to December , but are more attracted to this place to interact with the promoters Jyoti and Yashodan and their unique one its only kind in India sloping rooftop garden house with rainwater tanks and the many tiny surprises that the conservatory has to offer.

If you are a nature lover and visiting Goa, the visit to the Mystic Woods by the Butterfly Conservatory of Goa is a must.
The rooftop garden with rainwater harvesting is unique.

Nestled in a hillside this place is beautifully converted to a tourist attraction of a different type. The hosts are very nice people a very knowledgeable on the subject. The natural fish spa is a delightful experience. We saw some beautiful butterflies.

The flora is special that attracts butterflies. The time spent in the Mystic Woods, like its name suggests give a mystic and meditative feeling.

its a good place to visit. they have several butterflies which come more often to visit there small garden developed. also they have a unique collection of different stones.
they have created a small pond in which they have variety of fish and also a waterfall.
they have arranged a small pond for fish pedicure experience as well.

a totally unique and different thing we came across was a big beautifully maintained roof garden on there own place with lawn on a sliding roof. its a beautiful flower garden with variety of plants.

i would recommend this place to visit.

It is a small and good place in a densely forested hill where one get to see different species of butterflies. They have Love Birds and also one can see other birds (if you are lucky enough). Rainwater harvest is a great idea to create an artifical water fall and a pond, this water is recycled. The park had few different varieties of trees and plants, to attract different kinds of butterflies. Morning is the good time to visit the park where we get to see lot of butterflies. Rustic Fish spa is an additional attraction.
Mind your steps when you walk through the park as you might come across snakes too, we were coming out from the park and exactly near the entrance gate we came across a big snake and it was scary as we were about to step on it, luckily the dogs present there helped us to get back.

Thank you for your visit and kind comments . It has been a project of converting the open cucumber fields to a densely forested area , so thats a good compliment to receive. The snake you noticed is a rat snake which is non venomous and fairly docile , so there as no real danger . We are happy to mention that our place has had zero incidents of animal or insect bites or stings to visitors.

We visited in May and that too in afternoon which was definitely a bad time for a visit. The conservatory is open and is not a zoo so obviously there is no guarantee you would spot a butterfly. Yet we were lucky to spot a couple of butterfly species. The place and the whole efforts are worth lauding and inspiring. I would recommend it to a true nature lover who would not be "demanding" a certain number of butterfly species before he can return happily. Definitely the winter season should be a perfect one. Perhaps one can contact at the conservatory before planning the tour if one is not sure.

First of all I congratulate the owner to have such butterfly park with his individual interest. Good place for nature lovers to visit. I had read the reply by owner for some of the review by which I came to know the real interest of owner on biodiversity conservation. Yesterday, I visited with minimum preparation. Time of visit was some what odd 12 to 2 pm. Butterflies are less. Still i could sight about 20-25 species. Due to shortage of time I could not interact with the owner. The rooftop garden is also wonderful and new to me.

About some of the negative reviews, people's expectation is to have lot of butterflies with lot of flowers (nicely organised like in any park) without understanding their life cycle. You can provide some displays of butterflies recorded in your park and their life cycle for awareness. Can provide videos /presentations.

In the hustle bustle of Goa, this place makes u at home with nature. Especially in the month of December when one who see crowded restaurants and beaches this was an indeed different Goa experience. The terrace garden of the owners are a must visit!

Whatever you do ... PLEASE do not be tempted to go to this place.

We went in the beginning of December 2017 and although they state there are 133 species of butterfly, we saw just THREE species! About six of one species and one specimen of the other two species! In fact we saw more butterflies in the grounds of our hotel than we saw here!!

The place ('Mystic Woods') is tiny and consists of a small concrete pond with a couple of golfish in it, a small pond where you can put your feet in to let fish nibble at your dead skin and a very scruffy aviery which has about 4 bugerigars, a couple of very small parrots and a duck. Thats it, The walk consisted of aproximately 50 yards and has steps you could break your neck on if you slipped.

The best part was reading the ticket you get after paying your 100 rupees. It states .... and I quote ... -
* Entry to the premises as well as parking is at one's own risk.
* We are not responsible for any accident, falls, sting or animal bites during your visit.
* This ticket is non refundable and non transferable under any circumstances and cannot be reused.
* This project is largely based on open garden concept and sighting of butterflies is not guaranteed.

I was always under the impression that butterflies liked flowers and sunshine. Well you won't see any flowers or sunshine in 'Mystic Woods', maybe that's why they won't guarantee you seeing any butterflies in this very misleadingly named Butterfly Conservatory of Goa.

We thank you for your review and hope that similiar like minded people heed your sage advice . You may know that the project is a conservation effort to re-forest the hill slope and keep the forests 74 hectares beyond that . We have taken butterflies as a starting point and NOT as the star attraction of the place. We have had butterfly enthusiasts spend hours waiting patiently to photograph - and it is their tally that we quote to be 133. We do not advertise or invite people . Infact we have even taken down the website so that people are not mislead into thinking this is anything else other than an individual "middle-class" persons attempt to stop the real estate sharks from devouring whats left of our green Goa. The aviary and the pond ,etc are some things we have created to make the place interesting for school children that visit our place . We plan to have live insect exhibits ,etc as and when we can afford it . When we bought the place from a builder there were no trees and lot of sunshine . Now there are trees and no sunshine ( hence no flowers ) - that was THE objective of the exercise. Finally Butterfly Conservatory of Goa is the not for profit organisation that hopes to convert barren hill slopes of Goa into forests . Mystic Woods is one of the projects. You may have also noticed that there were no crowds or tour operators or taxis -something we avoid. We get nature lovers and like minded conservationists and schools . We get curious people to see the unique rooftop garden and rain water harvesting projects . People really interested in what we do , fix prior appointment and connect with us to understand and appreciate. Rs.100 we believe is the lowest priced entry ticket for any private park anywhere in the world . You may not even get a cup of tea for that in your country . Students we admit for even less. We respect your opinion of our place and don't dispute any of your observations or recommendations ( we find that it riled you so much that it inspired you to write your first reviews in life across all sites ) .

A lovely place for nature enthusiasts and if you wish to spend some tranquil time away from the crowd . Since it is an open garden , we went there to soak in the beauty that the place has to offer and if you can patiently watch the little beauties flutter in and out of the foliage , you might be lucky to get a picture or two . Apart from the butterflies , there were mushrooms, wild flowers , other insects and above all peace. Kudos to the ones who've transformed this place into something beautiful and worthwhile.
