For me the best part of this zoo was the bird collection. The zoo exhibits a good range of Australian indigenous birds in good aviaries.
There are koalas but not many marsupials other than the kangaroos and wallabies.
The children can walk through the kangaroo...More
We visited looking for an activity for children in the adult friendly hunter. The zoo was lovely. Feeding kangaroos and farm animals. Great access and visibility to all the other animals. Really clean and well presented. We would visit again.

Having been promised masses of kangaroos and several resident rarities like Echidna, we hadn't seen any in our first three weeks and then only a few kangaroos at distance, until we visited the Hunter Valley Zoo on 19th November. This more than made up for...More

That would depend on if you were interested in the keeper talks and whether you wanted to make it a day out with picnic lunch as bbqs are supplied. We got there around 10am and did a couple of talks and a meet encounter. Had picnic lunch. You could do it in a few hours or make a day of it depending on your options.
