About
Kilchoman Distillery is a family run, independently owned single malt whisky distillery on Islay. It was the first to be opened on the island in over 124 years and is currently the only distillery producing whisky entirely on the island from barley that is grown on Rockside Farm, malted, distilled, matured and bottled on site. It is the smallest distillery and offers regular tours throughout the day. A cafe serving light lunches, homemade cakes and fresh tea and coffee is also open during the hours of 10am - 4.45pm. Advanced bookings for tours are encouraged to avoid disappointment.

- LyndsayWorld18 contributionsWhisky distillery with a very bright future!!!!0ne of the most interesting distillery tours we've even been on. It is very fascinating seeing a distillery that does everything by hand (making the whisky, bottling, packing, etc) all on site. It was so nice to see everything done from grain and glass and to be independently owned. Kilchoman also has the smallest, dinkiest wash & spirit stills that I have ever seen, which adds to the distilleries charm. Our tour guide was amazing (I think it was Sharon, but not 100% sure). We're really glad we visited the distillery on our short trip to Islay.Visited March 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 8 March 2023
- Olivia BIsle of Arran, United Kingdom1 contributionOutstanding tour and staffBeing a whisky enthusiast, distillery worker, brewing and distilling student, I was very keen to come to islay but especially Kilchoman. Very well organised farm distillery. Super clean and easy production flow to follow. We were on tour with 4 other gentlemen who were very good company. We could all agreed that our tour guide Kirsteen was AMAZING. Really knowledgeable, friendly and accommodating of ALL of my many questions. The few she could not answer were handed over to Lyle who was happy to give a lot of extra technical knowledge.Visited April 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 18 April 2023
- SailorCTonbridge, United Kingdom35 contributionsLovely cafe and staffThis was our favourite distillery, one of two we visited twice. Beautiful location, excellent cafe, and all the staff were very friendly. Happy to let us taste several different ones, and I selected Sanaig to buy. Closely followed by Ardbeg (lovely cafe) Bruichladdich (brilliant salesgirl who managed to sell me two bottles) and Laphroaig (good bottle pricing and nice visitor centre). One or two of the other distilleries were more of a scrum where I felt a bit of a scrounger asking for a taste and their prices were seriously uncompetitive; I don’t mind paying a bit more for the distillery experience but there are limits.Visited May 2023Written 18 May 2023
- Ewan AitkenEdinburgh, United Kingdom14 contributionsTop Islay distillery visitWe visited all 9 Islay distilleries in three days - all very good but Kilchoman was the standout. Amazing story of a family living their dream of creating a “seed to glass” distillery, outstanding tour with a very knowledgeable guide (Emma) who knows all there is to know about the science and the art of whisky making, and excellent tasting session out superb whisky and a lovely cafe and shop. Could not have been better. Big thanks to the whole team and especially Emma.Visited May 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 26 May 2023
- Dzeini S37 contributionsSpecial tour, a must-seeKiera was most entertaining and her great sense of humour made the tour most enjoyable. Didn’t get to see their resident cats Smoky or Peaty but this is a very special distillery literally from Barley to Bottle. The decor and furnishings are tastefully made from upcycled barrels.Visited June 2023Travelled with familyWritten 17 June 2023
- Tiaan v1 contributiontasting and tourMy wife and I had went on the Limited Edition Tasting and Tour (highly recommended). It was an incredible tour and Kirsteen, our guide, was fantastic and made the tour an unforgettable experience. Best tour and best distillery on Islay...by far.Visited June 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 19 June 2023
- Mark W3 contributionsBest distillery tour on the islandTook the limited edition tasting tour and was blown away by the whole operation. The only distillery on Islay completely producing everything from the island and then cashing and bottling there also. Our tour guide Breagh was amazing and answered all and any questions we had the fave is a great sample of some limited edition whiskies.Visited June 2023Travelled with familyWritten 1 July 2023
- smiffyman13 contributionsInformative tour and fun timeArrived at this fantastic independent distillery to a warm welcome from all the staff. We took to the bar where Ellie advised and helped us choose our Whiskies, according to our tastes, We ate a selection of food from the cafe menu, all were delicious! Our tour Host, the lively Ellie again gathered us together and we had a fantastic experience! Despite having only been in the job a couple of months, Ellie was eloquent, fun and friendly in telling us all about the Whisky she obviously has a passion for! The distillery has an amazing young lady on their hands, keep up the great work and we'll see you next year 🤞Visited July 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 7 July 2023

The staff in all areas were friendly and efficient, it was a lovely atmosphere, and lunch was great (though would recommend as it gets busy!). We didn’t have time to take a tour, but did purchase some drivers drams. We really liked the farm ethos, and would definitely do a tour if we return to Islay. Having visited other distilleries on the island this was definitely one of our favourites!Visited August 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 18 August 2023
- Tracy GGlasgow, United Kingdom3 contributionsGreat place for whisky: coffee : home cookingFantastic visit. We started with lovely homemade soup, followed by coffee and a chai latte and cake in the cafe. Staff were really friendly and the service was good. Then around the visitor centre and shop. Some nice and unusual items for sale ( treated myself to a few items). Definitely be back for a tour and another visit to the cafe when possible. Loved the big leather arm chairs to sit and have coffee/ cake.Visited August 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 16 September 2023

Instead of being located along the water to facilitate transport of their whisky, Kilchoman is located on a farm in the hills of Islay. The five mile drive on a single lane road through pastures with sheep and cattle is reason enough to visit. The staff have a strong sense of pride in their 100% Islay orientation. There also is a small cafe with surprisingly good sandwiches.

Having done many a distillery tour they can easily be the same so it was really nice to have a different take on distillery tour.
The staff were amazing from start to finish. The tour around the distillery was interesting and in each area a different dram was offered and gratefully received.
The banter was great not only from the guide but from all the staff we bumped into along the way from the handyman to the shop assistant.
A special dram was presented at the end to enjoy.
Well worth a visit and look for the tours and tastings in the good weather as they also have them outside on the beautiful machir bay.
I’ll certainly be back

A really interesting tour. We did the basic tour and learned a lot. Guide was excellent and well informed. Drivers Drams available for those that needed it. And a free sampling glass even on the cheapest tour makes for excellent value. Great to support the only independent distillery left on the island by spending a small fortune in the shop afterwards!

Founded in 2005, Kilchoman was the first new distillery to be built on Islay in over 124 years and founded by Anthony Wills. It is Islay’s only Single Farm Single Malt Scotch Whisky.
After visiting Bruichladdich earlier in the week we were feeling spoilt by the experience with free drams of premium whiskies in the visitor centre and an excellent host. So expectations were high for the best distillery in our Islay list.
The distillery is more off the beaten track than others but in a stunning location not far from the stunning Machir Bay. So well worth the trip, especially if you take a walk on the beach.
The visitor centre opened in 2020 just when Covid hit but provides some good tasting space and has a cafe.
Compared with Bruichladdich the tour was fascinating as it started from malting and continued right to the warehouse. Seeing the peat,
The host Ellie was a bit of an acquired taste… new to the role but knowledgeable and actually gave lots of useful info. Perhaps a little more warmth to make the tour more enjoyable. It’s all about the personality to communicate the ethos of the distillery after all.
Great selection of whisky in a variety of different barrel aging casks to try at the Limited Edition tasting after the tour (lasted nearly 2 hrs). Overall a solid 4 but with a few tweaks and perhaps a different host would be a 5 as the whiskey is great and the farm barley, on site malting etc is commendable.
For example:
Cognac - matured in cognac barriques. min 6 years . 50 percent alcohol . 50 ppm phenols .
Fino sherry - herbaceous , citrus . European oak, 5 years, 50 percent, 50 ppm
Loch gorm - Oloroso Sherry 8 years . 46 percent, 50 ppm. Spicy
Sauternes - 21 months in Sauternes for finish. Not fully matured, started in bourbon for 8 years.

We simply adored Kilchoman distillery, a must visit if you are touring Islay distilleries despite it being slightly out the way. The staff were the stand out part of this experience; super friendly, thoughtful and knowledgeable. The cake here is AMAZING, lunch is simple but well executed and the sanaig was our favourite Islay whisky we tried. The farm to bottle ethos is evident throughout the distillery, and the visitor is incredibly lovely without taking itself too seriously. Family friendly whilst still having plenty for whisky lovers to enjoy, a visit to kilchoman is a pleasure - we went twice!
And whilst you are there do make sure you take a walk along the amazing machir bay!

On the way to our accommodation on Islay we decided to do an unplanned stop at Kilchoman Visitor Centre. Super friendly staff and a beautiful bar and shop area. Wish we did more. If ever back on the island will definitely stop for longer.

Ellie is an excellent knowledgeable guide for the distillery tour. Modern distillery using traditional method. The tour includes 2 tastings. The visitor centre is modern, spacious; good place to eat, drink, shop. The location is somewhat off the main road; access is not as easy as other Islay distilleries.
