The Bangpu Nature Education Center is adjacent to the wildly popular Bangpu Recreation Center, where throngs of people congregate to feed and watch migratory gulls. The Nature Education Center is a more serious operation, aimed at more awareness of the coastal ecosystem. It mainly caters to school groups, but does offer daily short nature hikes at 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. They have raised walkways winding through the mangroves, which are quite pleasant. Some areas of the coast are pretty trashy and be warned there are lots of mosquitoes in the shade and sunburn in the open.... come prepared.

Bangpu Nature Education Center is on the south coast of Samut Prakan Province, an area of mangrove forests and mud flats leading to the waters of the Gulf of Siam.

Over the years the area has been over-fished and mangrove trees have been harvested to produce charcoal. All of this led to devastation of the area and further encroachment of high water levels.

The Bangpu Nature Education Center aims to educate people as to the importance of coastal mangrove forests as both breakwaters between the sea and the land, but also as the essential spawning grounds of so many coastal birds, fish, crabs, prawns, shrimps and other sea life.

You start your tour with short films in the Education Center then set off on boardwalks through the mangrove forests, looking out for various bird and sea life.

We spotted numerous "walking fish", ugly little critters that walk across the mud on two modified fins at the front of their bodies. I whimsically thought that perhaps that these were my ancestors which first came from the sea to the land.

We saw a a few small crabs, which quickly scuttled away as they saw us coming.

We also saw several different species of birds, but not being an ornithologist, I did not know their names.

I did note the impressive efforts being made along this part of the Thailand coastline for mangrove reafforestation, with small mangrove trees being planted in front of the older mangroves to extend them out across the mud flats. Bamboo fences have been built in front of them to protect them from the waves until they establish themselves.

All in all, a heartwarming hope for Planet Earth.
