The Citadelle, National Historic Site, is located on Cape Diamant. The star-shaped layout is characteristic of Vauban fortifications. Construction began in 1820 and ended in 1850. Its walls enclose 300 years of military history in Quebec City spanning the French, British and Canadian periods. The Citadelle is an active military garrison. Guided tours of the site and the Royal 22e Regiment Museum, open year-round. Ceremony and changing of the Guard in summer. Night tours in summer and fall season. 2014: A new permanent exhibition "Je me souviens" "Je me souviens" relates the 100-year-long epic of the Royal 22e Regiment, the Canadian Forces' sole French-language regular force infantry regiment. Find out about the lives of the French-speaking soldiers who have served in its ranks, from 1914 to the missions in Afghanistan. Audiences will enjoy an interactive experience exploring the built heritage of the fortress and the regiment's history through interviews, video archives, and interactive maps of battles. November 11, 2015 to September 4, 2016 The military parachutist, commonly known as a PARA in the armed forces, is an extraordinary infantry soldier. The PARA exhibition is a journey through the history, qualities, traditions, training, and specific techniques of these seasoned warriors. Visitors will discover an exceptional set of badges, symbolic objects, and images from the collections and archives of Musée Royal 22e Régiment, private collections, and military institutions. This amazing showcase will help everyone learn about the history of Canadian parachuting and common symbols of paratroopers around the world. Visitors will get a more concrete vision during an immersive experience where they simulate getting ready to jump out of a Hercules airplane amid images, parachutes, and decor that create the perfect ambiance. This major public exhibition is sure to please both curious adults and the whole family. Skydiving fans can also leave their mark by entering their name and the number of jumps they've made on the "How many jumps have you made?" wall. A booklet of activities (riddles, observation, etc.) is available to the kids for free. Access to the temporary exhibition is included to the fees of the general admission of the Citadelle and the museum.

The Citadelle is stunning, the pathway they made under the wall is great to get all caught up on the history of La Citadelle. I was a little bummed out that you needed to pay for the tour to see inside, we didn't enjoy it and ended up leaving early. We found the musuem under the wall more interesting, especially... More

We just walked around the outside. We thought it would be like a historic fort or a castle but since it is still a working military establishment it doesn't feel that "old" and we skipped paying to go inside the museum and just enjoyed it from the outside. There is enough of the old masonry walls to give you that... More

I booked the tour at the barracks and was joined by three young Japanese youth who spoke fairly good English. The tour guide spoke very quickly which they couldn't understand so I spent half my time repeating what she said so they could understand.I asked her to slow down but she was really just interest in getting it over and done... Guided tours in French or English. Guide very knowledgeable. Good overview of the place. Many old artillery pieces on display, but without identification. Changing of the guard not performed after October.

We took our tour of La Citadelle de Quebec the first morning we were in the city, which was an unplanned but smart move on our part. Starting out by learning some of the history of Quebec gave us a good foundation for visiting other sites in this old city. I'd recommend that approach, especially for US-Americans visiting Canada for... More

Just to say that back in 1964 i was stationed there and did my basic training there. Before going to Valcartier my group did the change of the guards for a whole summer and i was in charge of the guard room and to take down the flag every afternoon during the last parade. We were on duty 24 hours... More

We shall definitely return to see this event one day. Had to be content to see the views over the ramparts, particularly one of the Chateau Frontenac on the hillside with the Cunard liner Queen Mary 2 moored below, see photo.n Have seen some Canadian Guards before, at Ottawa, and wanted to compare. (But not with the British Guards in... More

Though mostly an outdoor tour & we toured on a chilly day, I'd still highly recommend this attraction! Incredibly informational museum + tour, giving you a good history lesson on the Citadel and the city. Bonus: fantastic view and photo opportunities overlooking the city, river, Frontenac hotel, etc. at the end. So worth the price and time. I'd say a... More
