Jacques Cartier was an explorer who claimed Canada for France in 1535. The Square forms an entrance to the Old Port of the city. It is full of life with hundreds of visitors walking up and down the wide street which is the Square. There are dozens of restaurants and other shops and stalls with traders selling their wares. The Square originally formed the gardens of a huge chateau, built in 1723, the Château Vaudreuil which was destroyed in a fire, in 1803. The square is home to a number of monuments, like Nelson’s Column and a statue to Vauquelin Lieutenant de Vaisseau, a French naval hero who became commander of the French fleet in the St Lawrence. This is a wonderful Square worth a visit.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 8 November 2023

Surrounded by restaurants and cafés with the gardens of Château Ramezay on one side. Also a statue of Nelson for some reason. There’s even a Jardin Nelson opposite. - PeteFredericksburg, Virginia1,200 contributionsBeautiful Place, Plaza, Piazza, etc.Personally, I thought this huge “Piazza” ended up being my favorite “plaza” in which to hangout. I might have preferred a statue of Samual Champlain instead of Admiral Nelson. It's a very nicely tiled area pleasantly lined with many choices of bars and restaurants. It was very lively the night I was there.Visited May 2024Travelled soloWritten 9 May 2024

- sanju_222323New Jersey16,658 contributionsThis place is full of vibes, especially on weekendsThis place is full of vibes, especially on weekends. Place Jacques Cartier was the site of Montreal’s public market until the 1950s. It’s now one of the main tourist sites in Montreal’s Old City. In the heart of Old Montreal, running from the Old Port to Rue Notre-Dame, Place Jacques-Cartier is a welcoming, open space with benches for resting and leafy trees for a bit of shade in the summer. At the beginning - depending on where you start- there is a Nelson's Column. Restaurants and retail outlets in 19th-century townhouses and mansions line both sides of the square. Many of Montréal's historic tourist attractions and things to do are nearby, including City Hall, the Old Palace of Justice, and the elegant 1705 mansion Chateau Ramezay Museum. Bonsecours Market is just beyond here, along Rue Saint-Paul. No stroll through Old Montréal would be complete without a stop at Place Jacques-Cartier, a lively spot steeped in heritage. A meeting place for centuries, Montrealers and visitors alike gather here to admire the view of the Old Port, sit for a spell at an outdoor terrasse, take in performances of the many street artists, and enjoy entertainment at every time of year. I was talking to shop owners and they mentioned- "This is nothing, come to Christmas season and you will see the real beauty. WowVisited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 28 August 2024

This is a big open square in the middle of Vieux Montreal, full of tourists. So there are lots of places to eat here, and they are tourist places, so I recommend that you step off the square to look for a place to eat or drink. The square is pretty.

Conveniently located along with dozens of eateries on what is Montreal's busiest neighborhood in summer. a welcome relief from the heat as well as above-average food awaits the tourist and local herein. The beer is cold and the service prompt and cheerful. One can do far worse in this teaming center of activity.

Lovely area with many places to eat and drink. Can get very busy, watch out for wasps though! We were plagued on our visit! On the corner is a lovely souvenir shop called Souvenir Place Jaqués-Cartier. Well worth a visit, they have better quality items amongst all the usual stuff. The staff are amazing though and will help with guidance around Montreal without rushing.

We enjoyed Place Jacques Cartier very much on our recent and first visit to Montreal. We stopped at this restaurant on our last night and what a disaster! We should have known something was amiss when the waiter brought out "sub buns" for our French bread. However, we continued to wait, over an hour and weren't served yet, although other customers were. After several times of literally grabbing our waiter, he finally brought the soup. We again waited about 45 minutes, stopping the waiter several times and got the promise the food would be right out. We threatened to leave and asked for a bill for the soup and drinks, and instead, he brought out the food. Big Mistake! The langistinos were tasteless and fishy smelling, and totally unedible. The steak tasted spoiled and was tough to cut. The only thing edible on either plate were the fries, which we didn't eat. In fact we ate nothing. We grabbed the waiter again and told him to send the manager, who never came. After waiting another 15 minutes, we left money on the table to cover what we consumed, including our drinks and left. As we walked out into the square, the manager Jimmy, came running after us, yelling that we didn't pay. He had two other goons with him. We explained what happened and that we left money on the table to cover what was edible, and after checking with the waiter, he quieted down a bit. We told him that we were not in the habit of paying for unedible food. However, he insisted we pay for the steak since my husband had cut into it, so being tourists from out of the country and not wanting to cause anymore of a scene, we paid and left. Like the other reviewers, I cannot find this restaurant on any website, cannot review there, but since I do use trip advisor, want to make people aware of this scam artist. It almost ruined our first trip to montreal, but after quieting down, we realized that everyone else had been so nice and our other dinners had been lovely with good service, that there are bad people everywhere and we just happened to run into one in Montreal. I hope this keeps others from this mistake.
