Place d'Armes has a nice, entertaining atmosphere, with local artists, musicians, and horse carriage rides all in the heart of the city. All cobble stone, with new and historical buildings surrounding this beautiful square. In the center of it all, you'll see the amazing sculpture of Paul de Chomedey the founder of Montreal. With buildings from the 17th and 18th... More

This is a lovely square in downtown Montreal with lovely statues, Notre Dame Basilica and close to the law buildings. Caleche (horse-drawn carriage rides) can be hired near the front of the Notre Dame for half hour or hour long rides.

This is a beautiful hotel, and on a balmy June night, the patio was perfect. We loved relaxing, looking over the city, there was a lively crowd, and great muic.

Definitely a place to go to, because it is surrounded by so many other historic places, especially the gorgeous cathedral.

The best thing to do is to park the car go to visit the cathedral and take some time to take pictures because many buildings are really nice. You may also take pictures of 4 statues of persons on the square who have help developing the city.

This truly feels like the heart of the City. Lovely square right outside of Notre Dame Cathedral. Particularly enjoyed the fleur-de-lis flagstones.

Staying in Vieux-Montreal (Old Montreal)

Neighbourhood Profile
Vieux-Montreal (Old Montreal)
The historic centre of Montreal, Vieux-Port is home to some of the city's most antiquated buildings and picturesque streets. Along the waters of the St. Lawrence River, the bank of Old Port features museums, festivals, food stalls, and outdoor athletics, a celebrated part of the city that explodes into fireworks displays on warm summer nights. At its centre, street performers and artists compete with sprawling restaurant terraces for space along Jacques-Cartier Square, while the cobbled streets of Rue St. Paul and Rue Notre-Dame offer a reprieve of quiet galleries and atmospheric wine bars. Horse-drawn carriages are not an uncommon part of traffic, and the narrows they traverse are lined with boutiques, crêperies, and poutine shops enshrined in buildings of stone and wooden lattices. Here you can evoke Montreal's past with a traditional cooking lesson or historical tour, then enjoy its artistic present with live music and theatre.
