Description:

Pointe-à-Callière, the birthplace of Montréal and a National Historic Site,...

Pointe-à-Callière, the birthplace of Montréal and a National Historic Site, offers visitors the opportunity to explore history through an original underground circuit leading through archaeological excavations. At the start of their visit, an immersive multimedia show presents a high-speed view of the city's history, the remains come to life and the count down begins! The museum also offers year-round temporary local and international exhibitions. For Montréal's 375th anniversary in May 2017, Pointe-à-Callière will inaugurate a new pavilion highlighting Fort Ville-Marie.

The museum was okay. There is a video you can watch before starting and the museum will make much more sense after watching it. The website didn't mention they were closing earlier that day and we had to run through everything. The archaelogical site was interesting but there was not much of it. If you have some knowledge of history,... More

We went there to find out more about Montreal's history. We did but the most surprising thing was the exhibit (temporary) about Agatha Christy. It was absolutely fascinating. So many things about her life that I didn't know. She helped her second husband (an archeologist) on his digs in the Mideast. Go see it while it's still there.

Took advantage of a 2 for 1 deal but totally worth paying for this ($20 pp)! Great way to get introduced to the history of the city and story of who it is. Worth stopping for the video at the front entrance (show plays every 30 minutes). The exhibits are interesting and well laid out. Activities for kids are ok... More

If you are new to Montreal, one of your first stops should be Pointe-a-Calliere Museum to watch the "Yours Truly, Montreal" multimedia show which provides an overview of the history of the region. The show starts a few thousand years ago and continues to present time detailing historical incidents and figures along the way. Very informative and also entertaining. After... More

We had a very great visit to this museum, and as it is located i. The heart of Old Montreal, along the river, it can be part of a whole beautiful day spent there.

The space is dark, the exhibits are not exciting and it is not very accessible. not worth a visit. on the other hand if you want to have a nice lunch go to the restaurant on the top floor. It is open on Sunday for a great brunch.

This museum was on my list when visiting Montreal for the first time, but not on my must dos. However, they were having a temporary Agatha Christie exhibition (in relation to Christie's interest in archeology and her visits to Middle East excavations) and being a Christie fan, I bumped it up to must do and am very glad I did.... This museum often has special exhibits which have generally been quite good: interesting and well presented. Their permanent exhibit showing the underground portions of Old Montreal is extremely well done and very interesting.

Staying in Vieux-Montreal (Old Montreal)

Neighbourhood Profile
Vieux-Montreal (Old Montreal)
The historic centre of Montreal, Vieux-Port is home to some of the city's most antiquated buildings and picturesque streets. Along the waters of the St. Lawrence River, the bank of Old Port features museums, festivals, food stalls, and outdoor athletics, a celebrated part of the city that explodes into fireworks displays on warm summer nights. At its centre, street performers and artists compete with sprawling restaurant terraces for space along Jacques-Cartier Square, while the cobbled streets of Rue St. Paul and Rue Notre-Dame offer a reprieve of quiet galleries and atmospheric wine bars. Horse-drawn carriages are not an uncommon part of traffic, and the narrows they traverse are lined with boutiques, crêperies, and poutine shops enshrined in buildings of stone and wooden lattices. Here you can evoke Montreal's past with a traditional cooking lesson or historical tour, then enjoy its artistic present with live music and theatre.
