Located right in front of the one-of-a-kind modernist Toronto City Hall, the square is a lively centerpiece in downtown busy with concerts, art shows, protests and ice skating. You can even rent skates to take a spin on the rink! The addition of the TORONTO sign from the Pan Am games makes it a must for the touristy photo op.

I did not know the name of this square so had to search to find the correct place to write this review. A great photo opportunity to have friends or family stand by, in or around this very large name sign. Everyone else does the same and you might have to wait a while to get your spot for the... More

I took my nephew skating here on a very busy evening, and we had a blast. He learned to skate amid a huge crowd of seasoned skaters, and enjoyed every second of it - the brightly-lit Toronto sign, the huge Christmas tree, the crowds, the food trucks, and the happy, fun atmosphere. He loves running in open spaces and NPS... More

Our family went skating on the outdoor rink on new year's day. The weather was fantastic. It was sunny and 2 degrees. It was busy but still a lot of fun. You can rent skates if necessary. Great time just to be a people watcher here.

If nothing else, it's a great place to get a picture in front of the Toronto sign. Nice area, felt safe night and day.

Staying in Downtown

Neighbourhood Profile
Downtown
At the heart of Toronto, Downtown is the destination for cheap eats and fast fashion. Cut through by hip and trendy Yonge Street, the vibe here is young, with a strong student influence from the Ryerson University Campus. As a result, the Downtown area is always in flux: undergoing the construction of new facilities, with fresh retail spaces and pop-up cafes. Home to Toronto's largest indoor shopping mall, a number of vintage cinemas, and a healthy nightlife centered on the area's Distillery District bar and clubs near the East End, it's both an easygoing daytime spot and a popular party place after sunset. It also features some of Toronto's best outdoor landmarks, including Yonge-Dundas Square and the Nathan Phillips Square: perfect for a concert, a skate, or a relaxing sit-down.
